“The Place to Stay - for the Atacama!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

We arrived here late at night, and found a few sandwiches waiting for us in our room.

The next day we explored the hotel (as one does) and found it to be spacious, friendly and having expert guides who would take us out on excursions.

The Salt Flats was a 'must', and the Valley of the Moon an 'even more must'. We took scores of photos, and enjoyed a picnic as the sun went down.

Food - excellent. Wine - after just one bottle there was no more left. More would be bought in the next evening, but it wasn't. Some staff came from the local village, and did not really speak good English.

But - we'd go there again. The Atacama is quite stunning, but include a visit to the Mendoza vineyards of Argentina, and quench your thirst.

Barrie,
We are happy that you'd like to visit us again in the future! We apologize for not having the wine that you requested but we've made changes in our ordering strategy to make sure that doesn't happen again. We agree that the Valle de la Luna and Salt Flats are spectacular, and very memorable, and the spaciousness of the hotel property gives our guests plenty of room to relax and enjoy themselves.

Best regards,
Kristina Schreck

People, not just staff, will care you and they will really care about you.
There is plentiful of cheaper places to go in San Pedro, but if you ad full board and all the available tour's there are in offer, the cost difference will be slim. Ad to that the attention you get, the constant follow up of your needs, and being just outside of town by the side of the river in a desert valley as well the colours of the hills, you cannot ask for much else. Pools, spa, massages and all the self-indulgence options, also are included. Rooms are really good, and the restaurant will give an ample variety choice of foods.

Room Tip: seek for a river side room

We spend 4 nights with my wife and daughter, and it was really a great experience. Besides all the beautiful places you can find in San Pedro de Atamaca, the hotel is really fantastic. The rooms are huge and spacefull (with an "outside shower" that is great), the food is really good (there is a 3 choice Menu with gourmet food that changes twice everyday), there are like 9 pools at different temperatures and a Spa that is fantastic. There are also different excursions everyday, with guides that are very well prepared, besides explaining all about the places that you visit, they know all the stories behind each place. The service given by all the people that work at the hotel is also great, so I recommend this hotel 100%!

This place is hidden in a valley on the outskirts of San Pedro town providing a very relaxing and quiet atmosphere. It is a very central location for visiting the Atacama attractions, with plenty of activities in the wider area. We spent 5 days here under an all-inclusive package and absolutely enjoyed ourselves. All-inclusive covered the room, transport, excursions, restaurant, bar (beer, wine & local beverages such as Pisco Sours only), rentals etc, anything you may need.
Morning and evening excursions were available to all the attractions via hotel Vans / guides that shuttle you anywhere you may need or want to be. They organize everything, you just have to tell them what you want to do and when. With so much to see and do, talking to the activities manager is essential!
The facilities are very modern but still keep with the architectural roots of the region. They have pools, jacuzzi, SPA, indoor / outdoor bars, a high-end restaurant, internet enabled computers, lounges, anything you might want... A night dip in the jacuzzi is also a must.
The food and service in the restaurant was excellent.
The staff were amazing, very knowledgeable while working well together ushering us around where we wanted to be and keeping us well-feed / watered.
We were present during Chile's National Day holiday where a BBQ / Pool party was thrown with live music and dancing. Was pleasantly unexpected.
From observation, this place is targeting the more discerning traveler (comfortable) and is also very good for easy going families. There were plenty of amazing guests here!
Highly recommend and intend to bring more of the family in the near future.

we spend 3 nights at this wonderfull hotel in August 2013 and we would stay for 2 additional nights, it´s really not only a Hotel, but a place to enjoy the nature, excelent excursions, with a 5* attention, the rooms and facilities were expansive, comfortable, and impeccably maintained by the housekeeping staff. The hotel staff was very, very friendly and helpful all the time. And the cusine was amasing, with local products, unforgettable.

We're very happy that you enjoyed your stay, and you are right, the Alto Atacama is more than just a hotel, it is an entire experience. Our guests often comment how wonderful it is to have an expansive, open plan that allows you to walk about and feel the magic of the desert, instead of being confined in a closed setting. Thanks and hope to have you back!

The Atacama desert is something not to be missed, if possible, in a lifetime. An experience to be remembered over and over specially when life gets too hectic. The vast desert surrounded by majestic mountains is breathtaking. But the whole experience takes a whole new dimension if you come home each evening, from the many excursions, to the fantastic, beautiful Alto Atacama. Each detail in the hotel expresses in its beauty and in the comfort it provides, the care in which it was built and is kept. Set in a lovely gorge, it is itself a spectacle at sunset. Check out the hotel site. My daughter and I couldn't be happier with our trip to Atacama desert and the Alto Atacama.

Room Tip: All the rooms I saw were great!

Monica,
We agree that the Atacama Desert is not only one of the most special places in Chile but one of the most special places on earth. The Alto Atacama and its 3km distance from town allows for absolute tranquility and silence, and our architectural design blends seamlessly into the Catarpe Valley. Thanks for taking the time to comment on your experience, we're glad you enjoyed your stay!

What an amazing location. Built on the site of a very old pre-Inca fort, in an ancient gorge formed deep into red rock and sand, this is a modern-day oasis of the best kind. The rooms are comfortable and the bathrooms spacious, although ours only had a shower and no bath -- something you should specify if you like to soak after a day's hiking.

Our stay was for an all-inclusive price, covering accomodation, three meals a day, drinks including alcohol, all the tours and even a visit to the local museum. One nice touch -- the mini-bar beverages are also included.

The hotel runs a really good program of tours in the area -- from a gentle walk to more strenuous hikes and climbs. All their guides speak excellent English, and their fleet of vans depart at scheduled times to take you on whatever tours you select the night before. We found every guide to be both very knowledgeable about their culture and history and geological data, as well as having great pride in their country and their work.

The variety and content of the tours was excellent, and in spite of the vagaries of weather, the tour manager helped us find really interesting and enjoyable tours each morning and afternoon.

The dining room is very pleasant, the staff prompt and attentive, but the food itself is nothing to write home about. Breakfast buffet is very good. Lunch and dinner have set menus offering a choice of four starters, four mail meals and four desserts, but we found a great sameness after a few days. However we did not go there for the food.

In summary, this is a wonderful 4-star place to stay if you are looking for a great base to explore some really interesting and historic places in the North of Chile.

Room Tip: If a bath is important you need to specify this then you make your reservation. Don't forget you...

Chris,
It was our pleasure to host you and we're glad you enjoyed your stay! Our location is what makes the Alto Atacama special, there are no other hotels in the area that offer such a stunning natural environment, although we do want to point out that the hotel is actually not built on an ancient fort but rather down the road from the Pukara de Quitor fort. Our staff are eager to please and they strive to provide our guests not only with personalized attention but as a way to open the window to the region's fascinating culture and nature. You are correct that we do not have bathtubs in our rooms, however we do have an outdoor and indoor Jacuzzi should you want a soak. We hope to see you again!
