“Fresh fish”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2012

We enjoyed this restaurant so much we visited twice in the few days we spent in Ancud. Unfortunately many of the items listed in the menu were unavailable, but the meal we had was excellent. The grilled hake is worth trying. Vegetarian options are extremely limited (salads and side dishes) but the wine list is enticing.

“Disappointing food quality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2012

Interior of the restaurant was interesting and provided a pleasant ambience. The food was varied and reasonably priced. Two of us ordered a jardiniere of shellfish to share. We were surprised that the food was cold as this had not been mentioned on the menu, and were worried when we saw that although some looked freshly cooked, other shellfish were dried up and very cold. No explanation was given but the response was defensive. The third meal ordered was fine.

“Please Build an Instantaneous Portal from Kurantón to My House”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

Kurantón is highlighted in both the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide guides to Chile. I agree with their assessments 100%. This was my favourite restaurant out of all the ones we visited.

From the moment we walked in we were well taken care of by the old school waiter. The decor was fanciful, featuring collections of objects from the world over. We started with a pair of pisco sours and they were made by hand with fresh ingredients and frothed to the max.

Since we were going for the curanto, and we were warned by the waiter that it was huge and not to eat too much bread, we didn't get any appetizer. When the curanto arrived it looked beautiful. A huge plate full of mussels, clams, smoked pork, chicken, and three types of potato. It smelled delicious and oh, oh, did it TASTE delicious. The shellfish were fantastic and the local smoked pork is not to be missed.

Afterward we took part in some dessert, coffee, and some of the extensive liquor list. The restaurant has a nice wine selection and stays open late during the week.

We came back on Christmas Day when we noticed the place was still open and had a mixed seafood garden and a tortilla de mariscos. Both excellent. We got to meet the owner and had yet another excellent meal.

I can't wait to go back!
