We were handed a leaflet for the Star Hotel whilst boarding the boat from Siem Riep to Battambang (which, incidentally, takes 8 hours during low-water season not 6 as the guides say). Looked good, so we took them up on it. A free minibus picked us up from the dock and dropped us at the hotel. Our twin room was large and clean, with an overhead fan. Decor is quite swanky with nice carved wooden headboards, though the striplight is a little odd (same as our previous hotel) and there were no bedside lamps. We didn't bother with the air con although for $8 extra we could have used it. The hotel has been recently built therefore the ensuite wetroom is nicely fitted out in marble, and everything worked. The hotel is located just across the road from the bus stop to Phnom Penh which was handy. It was a 4 minute walk to the central market. Opposite are some French colonial flats (rather crumbling). We arrived early evening and the hotel arranged a moto daytrip for us the following day which was good value and great fun. We were able to pick our own start time and itinerary. Staff in the rooftop bar were friendly and spoke good English, which helped while away an evening while my friend was ill in bed. Highly recommended, and extremely good value for money - because it was out of season it only cost us $12/night.
