“Nice setting and good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

This is a nicer option for dinner in town. Food is good, it has a very nice wine list and both are affordable. We tried the tasting menu and didn't think it was amazing, probably better to go for a dish. Nice views over the canal

“Excellent. Watch the World Go By in Tranquility”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

We stayed at Viewpoint for 5 nights, and at at the Shan Restaurant 3 times. Food is upscale Myanmar cuisine.

The ambience is a welcome reprieve from the chaos out at the boat docks, but yet still feels part of things. You can sit and watch the world go by down on the street, so close you can almost touch it, but yet it's still calm and relaxed inside, and if you don't look out, you forget it's all going on out there. There is a lovely wine bar area downstairs too.

The wine list is the best we've seen in Myanmar by far, and the prices much more reasonable than other nice hotel restaurants. Food here was probably 1/3 the cost of the food at our hotel in Mandalay or Yangon, which were crazy priced. We spent about $10 per person here for a meal, but it was quite a different experience than at the cheaper restaurants and we were so glad it was here.

The food was flavorful and tasty, almost to a tee, lots of new things to try that were well made. Lots of people seem to have done the fixed menu, but we didn't try that so maybe that's why we were happier than others. The service though was really really slow and mostly absent, and if a big tour group comes in then forget about it. They don't have the staff or the training to keep up with a jam-packed restaurant. They are really nice though, and we didn't really want a "trained-to-the-tee" cracker jack experience - you still feel these are local people not a product of a tourism factory. The wine by the glass was bad, so good thing the bottles were reasonable (for a nice hotel) and plenty to choose from.

We enjoyed Shan Restaurant, and would definitely eat there again next time around. Make sure to make reservations if you want to be sure you have a seat.

“A respite from all the Mayhem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

actually there is no mayhem - but extremely well placed by the jetty for a pre-or post boating feed. Lovely cocktail bar downstairs, could put some NY bars to shame. Upstairs huge resteraunt, glass of cold taittinger 12000 kyat, two glasses of french chardonnay and the shan tappas selection, we had the dumplings, pea sproout salad, inle shrimp and for some reason nuts, all delicious, bland but delicious and safe is what you want when boating the next day. $33 US, Good service and romantic decor.

“Promising so much, delivering little.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012 via mobile

How can an Asian restaurant run out of rice! We booked early for12 people, but no table was ready for us. Meal service was haphazard. Some still waiting while others had finished. A menu item requested by a guest with specific diet requirements, was 'unavailable' yet appeared as part of the Shan taster-served on plates which did not fit on the table without overlapping other guests space! No nibbles served with drinks - was common everywhere else. A disappointing meal for the price spoiled a final night out. Great atmospheres.

Well, I think I answer already on the review posted on Nov-11 that I blow it. That was about the same dinner night and at the same table. You were 12 that night. I hope not to receive 12 negative posts in total ;-) I get the message and you are all my guest on your next visit + deserve my apologies.

“This is where I fell in love... With Shan Tomato Salad!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

The food here is spectacular, and the staff are friendly. Definitely eat here! It's a few bucks more expensive than the cheaper options around town, but it is just delightful! I would recommend it to everyone!
