This hostel will be remembered as one of the absolute worst hostels we stayed at during four years of travels! Do NOT stay here if you can avoid it at all.
The main house seemed okay. It was located in the historic old centre. It has a small outdoor area (where breakfast was served, and at night where people partied), a small indoor area (where during the day people used the computer and/or the very slow wifi connection, and at night people slept on the benches), a communal kitchen (which was actually the space behind the reception counter, so pretty impractical to actually cook in), and shared toilets (which in the mornings were pretty dirty but they did get cleaned every day).
This is all we saw of the main house, since although we had a booking for a double room they were full and we had been put in the "apartment". This place was the real problem. It was a 10-minute walk from the main house, and not in the direction of the sites. So it was outside the historic area and far from any restaurants.
All the apartment had was four rooms... a toilet room that was okay but was not cleaned in the time we were there, a shower room that smelled worse than third-world out-houses we have been in, a double room that was completely bare -- nothing but two twin beds and a lightbulb hanging from bare wires in the middle of the room, and another room that was set as a six-person dorm. The dorm acutally was large and looked like people could spread out a bit, so it may have been alright... except for the fact that if you stay there, you would still have to use the shower room. Honestly there was an open drain in that room that I swear went straight to the sewer, it smelled so incredibly bad that neither I nor my husband could shower... in fact, just walking in made my eyes burn!
So although we picked Hikers because of the promise of a kitchen, wifi in the room, and the social aspect of backpacker places, we got NONE of that at the "apartment". Heck, there were not even blankets on the bed. I have never seen a room so sparce, it was more like a cell than a welcoming hostel room.
We had planned to spend four days in Plovdiv, but once we saw our room we decided to leave as soon as possible.
One other note... when they took us to "the apartment" our room had been slept in the night before. The employee, simply took off the other sheets, handed us a set and walked out. There was no other cleaning at all. And believe me, this room needed a hoovering. In our room, there were dust bunnies so big they deserved names!
It was all unbelievable bad. The owner of Hikers Hostel should be very very ashamed with what they are offering. We have stayed in hostels around the world, and rarely have we come across one so bad. We will definately NOT return. And even took the time to find an alternative in Plovdiv -- Gusto Hostel. So make a booking with them and completely avoid Hikers.
