“A must see in Veliko Tarnovo!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

We visited the fortress on a beautiful, sunny November Sunday. The hilltop church and fortress provided wonderful views of the surrounding areas. The church featured very interesting modern paintings and decor. I was impressed!

“Majestic views from a wonderful place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

The impressive Tsarevets Fortress is a medieval stronghold located on a hill with the same name in Veliko Tarnovo. It served as the Second Bulgarian Empire's primary fortress and strongest bulwark from 1185 to 1393, housing the royal and the patriarchal palaces.
We went to visit in August and on that day there was no entrance fee (but usually there is a small fee, cash). The site is huge and there is a certain elevation to walk up to get to the hill, but take your time because it's really worth it: the panoramic vistas are fantastic. The atmosphere of this site with its ruins is fascinating, there are no crowds so you can freely explore and admire the amazing views all around.
The Sound and Light audiovisual show at Tsarevets Fortress is an attraction carried out in the evening that uses three lasers, variegated lights, dramatic music and church bells to tell stories of key moments of the history of Bulgaria. The show is free and the best spot to observe it is from Tsar Ivan Asen II Square at the entrance of Tsarevets.

“Excellent but take your time to enjoy the experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

Visit here and use your imagination to gain a glimpse not only of the past but how Bulgarians are shaping their future. The views of Veliko and the surrounding countryside are amazing, the frescoes are beautiful, take your time to enjoy the atmosphere, the ruins and the reconstructed buildings but do not forget to get your ticket on the street leading up to the fortress or you will be walking back again to pay for your entry. Spacious so you never feel crowded by other visitors, a place were everybody is actually smiling as they go around, maybe something in the fresh Bulgarian air!
