“Don't miss a chance to visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014 via mobile

The theather is one of main places of interest in Sao Paulo downtown. If you are lucky enough to get a ticket for an event (they are usually sold out), it's the best way to make a visit. 2014 opera season is specially good, and prices are OK.

“ Lovely theatre & an incredible tour ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

The theatre tour here was incredible. English tours are held at 11am and 5pm from Monday through to Friday. They go for about 45 minutes. The tour starts in the main foyer, takes you into the only reserved section for the mayor, minister for arts etc on the second level and then up into the stalls seats to see the theatre inside. It really is stunning from Italian marble, beautiful chandeliers to gorgeous lead lighting. The three coffee barons built the São Paulo opera theatre for the people and city of São Paulo, inspired by European opera houses. The young friendly tour guide that did our tour was lovely and spoke perfect english. The tours are free of charge, when you walk through the entrance doors of the theatre you will go to the ticketing counter in your left and be asked to register your name and details. Then the tour starts! Gorgeous theatre and well worth the visit!

“A very good “19-century” theater.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

Although the neighborhood has seen better times, the theater is top notch. It’s not very large, the seats are wide and with excellent legroom. There are not really bad seats here.

The “home orchestra and choral” are pretty good and they stage regularly (at least in 2013-2014) very good operas and concerts at unbelievably low prices.

“The good and bad news”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

The good news is that Teatro Municipal is located in the heart of São Paulo.

The bad news is that Teatro Municipal is located in the heart of São Paulo.

Why? Because the heart of São Paulo has been basically abandoned by the authorities who have allowed it be taken over by beggars, drug addicts, robbers, prostitutes and so on.

During the day it is busy and relatively safe although someone once tried to steal my wallet on the Viaduto do Chá just outside the Teatro Municipal in broad daylight.

At night, forget it. Visit the Teatro for Sunday morning or early evenings shows. You´ll certainly be a lot safer.

Once inside, avoid the seats on the higher floors, especially if you have vertigo. They are uncomfortable, squeezed together and at such a frighteningly steep angle that you feel as if you are on the edge of a cliff.

The seats at ground and the first level are obviously more expensive but, believe me, they are worth it.

Otherwise, it´s a cozy, intimate place and if you get a good view you can feel almost part of the orchestra.

However, there is really nothing for the tourist who does not want to watch a performance to see.

“Perhaps the most beautiful building in São Paulo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

The structure was amazing. It was a shame that I couldn't see a performance there due to a packed schedule. Would definitely like to do that on my future trip.
