We stayed only for one night in August 2007. We arrived at the hotel around 8 pm, and could tell this was not a safe area to be walking around at night. The check-in took longer than expected, although the staff was friendly and courteous. I speak spanish fluently, and understand some portuguese which helped since the person did not speak english.
The carpet in the room was very old and stained (I didn't dare walk around without shoes on). The bathroom tub was also stained, and the toilet made a lot of noise during the night.
The hotel was generous in providing us with a rollaway cot for no extra charge for a third person.
The room did have a magnificent view of the city, and there was a balcony we could walk out on.
The breakfast was very good, we did not try the restaurant for dinner.
We only stayed for one night, checking in to the Slaviero Executive Jardins Hotel, which we loved. We came back to this part of town later during the day, and felt ok walking around by ourselves (young women), but were still cautious and only carried a small backpack. It's location in the center of the city is ideal for visiting the historic center, but is not that safe at night.
Overall, it was ok for a one night stay, but would not stay there again.
