I was lucky to find out about hotel Estação Paraíso when looking for budget but decent accomodation in São Paulo. It looks rough from the outside - an old mansion squeezed between one of Metro Paraíso's station exits and a local "boteco" (Brazilian casual urban bar) - but the positive reviews I found when googling it encouraged me to give it a go.
My room was clean but strictly basic (no fancy tvs or decoration, but they do have free wi-fi) and tiny (especially the toilet/shower room), so bigger people might feel uncomfortable. There was some noise from cleaning staff working in the rooms, but it stopped after I made a complaint at the reception. Breakfast was simple but tasty and generous.
The best thing about this hotel is its location: you're next to Paraiso Metro station, which will take you anywhere in central Sao Paulo in no more than 15 minutes. There is also a registered taxi station in front of the hotel, which is highly convenient when going out at night or to areas not covered by the metro system. The Paraíso area is very commercial, full of cheap good eats and close to fancier stores/shopping centres, giving you plenty of choice.
Overall, I consider it a find, as it saved me about 40% compared to similar accomodation in the area. It allowed me to tour for a few days in São Paulo in a cheap, easy and relaxing way.
