The energy of this place on Sundays is worth exploring, if just once. There are lots of small booths with people selling crafts, clothes, knick knacks. A lot of it is cheap, but there may be some interesting items. (And one man's hamburger is another man's steak). I tried one of the a kilo restaurants and really did not think the food was very good. It was Japanese-ish, but quite a few of the dishes were heavily influenced by Brazilian tastes, including cheese filled spring rolls! Very easy access by metro--just got off at Liberdade and you are right in the middle of it.
