During our Brazilian trip we've been in several places, some very dirty and some very clean and good. This was old but very cleaned and well organized (it's part of Hostelling International chain).

The Sao Paulo Hostel Downtown is in a pretty old building, but overall is a good if you're low on budget. We took the double with private bathroom and the room was very large and clean, the bathroom was also comfortable.

Our room was made every day and they changed our towels too (the hostel policy says that guests should ask for change, but we found every night two clean and sealed towels in the room). The breakfast was very good and prepared every day, cakes included.

The location is good, walking distance from Placa da Republica, really downtown. Please note that even if pretty safe by Brazilian standards, downtown Sao Paulo is not really a "family" area, since there are some XXX cinemas and some night bars and discos related to the Sao Paulo GLBT community. But some people can appreciate this!

Around the Hostel there are some good and cheap churrascarias, and on top of the Hostel itself there's a bar with very good caipirinhas, sandwiches and free wifi. There's also a kitchen for guest use.

One final tip: unless you've very heavy baggage, don't take the taxi from the Hostel. In Placa da Republica there's a good and cheap bus connection to Guarhulos Airport.

We stayed in 2009 and the staff were very friendly and helpful; giving us advice and directions. The room was clean and fresh. There was a fridge, TV, extra blankets, hangars and effective air conditioning. The bathroom was spacious enough and clean. The shower had good pressure and temperature control.
The curtains weren't very good at keeping out the bright morning sunshine, but there wasn't much noise coming into the room. The bed, pillows and sheets were comfortable and clean.

The breakfast room was clean and airy, the food regularly replenished and of reasonable quality.

After reading a few revues I was not sure what to expect. This Hostel is in a great location for seeing the sights of Sao Paulo. I never felt unsafe in the area and did walk about in the evenings. The staff are very helpful and the Wifi certainly worked while I was there. My room double for single was a good size and cleaned very well every day.
The Bar and Kitchen on the 7th floor is very good.
I would certainly recommend this hostel

It seemed more like a hotel than a hostel, with clean towels every day and the large, multi-storey building.
The staff were very professional and helpful.
The breakfast was very good.
Free wi-fi and a decent kitchen were an added bonus.
It was close enough to restaurants, supermarkets and the metro station to be convenient.
Not much personality, but a pleasant place to stay for a few nights in the big city.
