As Sao Jose welcomes many visitors from around the Wolrd, the Cantina da Nena is a good place to go if you get tired of hotel food. Remember that in Brazil people dine after 7PM. It offers honest homemade pasta and steaks for a very good value. The atmosphere is informal and cozy. The service is good and English is understood, but not spoken by the waiters. Try the meat ravioli (raviole de carne), meat stuffed fresh pasta, the best in town. Also interesting are the steaks, the meat carpaccio and the crab cake (casquinha de siri). On Saturdays, try the Brazilian national dish, feijoada, a black beans and pork stew. Argentine and Chilean wines are reasonably priced. Fixed price menu at weekdays for lunch is also available. Reservations are not required, but be prepared to wait on Saturdays for lunch.
