“Stopping On Oregon Trail”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

I have read alot of ficton about the west and the immigration from the East in the last century. Somewhere it always seems to mention Independence Rock as being to jump off palce for many wagon trains. A short detour from the direction I was taking but well worth it. I found the names of some pioneers still very ledgbile after all the weather forces and decades gone by. The walk around to the south side enables you to see more signatures along with sighting of wildlife. The hike is more of a stroll except around the south base when you have to be careful bettting close enough to see signatures. The rest stop is clean and area maps and history on the walls provides additional info for travelers.

“History”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

Walking around Independence Rock is an important stop on the Oregon Trail. The signatures on the south side of the rock are the most visible, as they are less weathered.

“A nice way to stretch your legs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

As this site is located at a rest stop on hgihway 220, it is a perfect place to take a break from driving. It's a giant rock that you can see from a distance as you approach. There is a trail to follow around the base of the rock and in several places you can still see names of pioneers who passed by here. The trail is pleasant and we saw several bunnies and one antelope who crossed the trail in front of us. The bathrooms are clean.

“A great place for a highway break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

A nice break from being on the road all day. Hiking around the rock is a perfect opportunity for a half hour to stretch and exercise and learn a little history. Perfect place for RV'ers to park for the evening. Nice restroom facilities and quiet areas at night.
