Ponta Negra, of which you only see the forested headland in the ads, is a disaster unfortunately like most Brazilian urban beaches. The sand is full of broken glass from drunkard bottles and cups, and plastics fly everywhere. The Township has allowed for illegal building all the way to the sand, destroying the dunes and vegetation, and its 'beach walk" is being destroyed by the sea; rebuilding only makes it worse and brick and cement remains jut out of the sand. Vendors with pirate CDs of the worse Brazilian music tout their illegal trade with mobile loudspeaker trolleys which make staying close unbearable. All in all it sums up all I hate in Brazilian beachgoing: noise, filth, environmental detsruction, and mostly ugly people to top it. Go somewhere else if you´re smart and like neat places!
