“The Holiday Of A lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2010

Admit we booked late but were delighted to find this proprietor operated business.
( My view of sleep quality was altered by the carnaval taking place overnight so I slept during day.)
Teresa goes to endless trouble to ensure all her guests have a memorable stay. The hotel attracts people of a similar mindset with the result that many of the guests remain in touch via Facebook, even though from countries as remote from Brazil as Holland and America.
Our room faced Sugar Loaf in one direction, Christ The Redeemer in the other. Dawn rising over Sugar Loaf Mountain must be one of the world's most exotic views, while Christ The Redeemer statue is unique.
Situated high above Rio's beachside areas, the heat of the mid day sun is avoided while wildlife including butterflies, exotic birds and monkeys can be watched from the windows.
All this and staff who are friendly beyond the call of duty, and most of whom speak English. What more could one want?

Coffee, juices, fresh pineapple, mango, ham, cheese, eggs, breads and the crispiest rolls this side of Hanoi. Not a bad way to start the day but it seems pretty much par for the course at the Casa 579 . . .

Its almost a nonsense to call this place a hostel or a B&B - it looks like and feels like home - a home efficiently managed by Teresa and a nucleus of permanent staff who are all dedicated to ensuring that you have a comfortable base from which you can enjoy this fascinating and vibrant city. The Casa 579 is unique. If you are looking for a quiet, non-partying sleepover in a safe and colourful quarter in the heart of Rio, then look no further. As Nigel Tufnell of 'Spinal Tap' would say, 'this one goes to an 11'.

Casa 579 is located in Santa Teresa and is off the beaten path. If you are looking to stay with the masses of tourists in Ipanema beach, this may not be for you. But if you are looking for a more unique and authentic experience of Rio, this is a fantastic option.
My husband and I stayed at Casa 579 in Feb right before Carnival in a private room, and again after Carnival in the dorm. Both stays were a good experience.
For the private room, we had a balcony overlooking the city with views of both sugarloaf and the cristo and nice hammocks to relax in. But even when just staying in the very spacious dorm the Casa has plenty of places to relax and meet other travelors. The rooftop deck is stunning, and the lounge room is spacious and also takes advantage of the view. We especially liked how the dorm had room dividers for some privacy and there were no bunked beds at all so it was very comfortable.
Breakfast included fresh friuts, toasts, cakes, ham, cheeses, hard boiled eggs, juice, coffee, tea...it was often enough to fill us up until dinnertime!

A little further away from the main touristy areas, this hostel provides arguably the best views in Rio. The upstairs deck is excellent for relaxing and if you were looking to save money by relaxing at the hostel for a few days then this would be a very comfortable place to do it. the staff are very proffesional and the activities reccommended are good value for money. I stayed in the dorm and the private room and both are very spacious and clean. The breakfast is excellent and on many occasions we could save money by filling up and skipping lunch.
The only down side is it is a little far away from the action and there is only a limited number of restuarant options in the area. that being said the kitchen is of a good size and is very clean.
In our 3 months in south america this is defininately one of best hostels we´ve found.

I visited Casa 579 last year on august 09, and the stay was fantastic, 3 floor house, big enough, great people a wonderful view from terrace, great full view of Rio from Santa Teresa.. is one of the most AMAZING places i've been, if you are travelling to Rio, and dont stay here... you WERE NOT in RIO, stay here 'cause what you'll live here... you wont regret! I RECOMMEND this to you all,, visit CASA 579, is a great place to stay in Rio!
From the house you can get everything, Largo do Guimaraes (where you can find a magic little town, its wonderful seeing "Bondes" those yellow little trains carrying people travelling up nd down the town) - Lapa (where you can have party 7 days a week!) all in about 4 or 5 minutes. Go there and enjoy Casa 579!

The place is located in Santa Teresa, which is up the hill from Lapa, in a beautiful residental area with an almost Mediterranean feel to it. Totally different from the messy Rio the cursory traveller gets to see. You need to take a bus, cab or tramway to get there, but it is definitely worth it. The view from the terrace is amazing. They have nicely decorated rooms and a very spacious dorm, which is pure luxury compared to the typical hostel dorm. Worth paying the little extra! I met great people there and made real friends. The staff is very helpful in organizing your stay. Great and cheap restaurant just around the corner, also with great views over downtown Rio, especially at night.
