“Good location, poor service and dirty rooms.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

Terrible service, poor quality rooms, poo in pool, and smelly hall ways. People around the main entrance offering cocaine and hookers - not what we expected.

Great location though. Easy access to the beach.

The location is excellent: In front of Copacabana Beach, near restaurants, a lot of options of transportation to other destinations in the city, many options of shopping near the hotel.

The staff is very helpful.

The sight seeing of the front rooms or of the roof is something that you’ll never forget in your life.

The rooms and bathrooms are clean and comfortable.

The breakfast has many options of Brazilian fruits, breads, etc. Everybody enjoys it and the atmosphere is calm and relaxing.

What else can you expect in a hotel in Rio de Janeiro?

Room Tip: The view of a front room is unforgetable.

We are 2 ladies travelling together & had received confirmation prior to arriving that we would have a twin bedded room. After waiting for a very long time to actually be allocated a room - lo & behold a double bed. Back down to reception for an even longer wait & evntually we get our twin bedded room, to find we are directly below the swimming pool motor. We were assured that this went off at 10pm so sleep should not be a problem. Daytime reception staff quite surly, thankfully the evening reception staff were quite the opposite, in particular Carlos Henrique who could not have been more helpful & pleasant. Our room was booked as a super de luxe what on earth the lesser rooms are like I dread to think.

Surprisingly, I found out later that my second night rate was slightly higher than the first night. which I was expecting it to be the same as I didnt consume anything for two days so watch out for your bill settlement. The value of money does not justify the of type amenities...firstly, the TV is outdated and not having a good reception for cable in the beginning...but got fixed after I reported it breakfast is average in terms of selection and quality. Lastly, wi-fi is only available in the business center which is not convenient for guests. I had to ask the housekeeping to change the bed linens as I saw strands of hair and unfortunately I had a peculiar bite on my leg thats why I had to ask the hosekeeping to remove the green bed covers.

I can't understand how the hotel got so many good reviews. It's just plain ugly.
But let's start with the positive things: the location is excellent, right next to Copacabana Palace. The staff is not rude (although not too kind either). The exchange rate is better than in most other hotels (and since it was holiday all the exchanges were closed). Breakfast is not too bad either.
And now the room, which for me is the most important, it was so small, you step into the room and you are standing right in front of the bed. There was a strange lemon cleaner smell too. AC was noisy. The bedsheet was torn and looked like it has been used in the last 20 years. Same about the towers. The bathroom was quite big actually, huge shower.
Because of the room though it was quite depressing and we were happy to go and check in to the beautiful Porto Bay hotel (which was not available for the first night, that's why I booked Astoria).
Would definitely not go back!

Rooms were clean and comfortable. We didn't have a beach view, but did have a lovely view of the Christ the Redeemer statue. Staff was courteous, the breakfast was very good, and the rooftop area is nice to take in the view. Used booking.com to reserve the room (two nights before!) and had no problems.

Only minor complaint is that WiFi is not free in the rooms, but it is free in the lobby.

For location this hotel is unbeatable & only a few doors away form the famous Copacabana Palace Hotel. It is right on Copacabana Beach & offers a roof terreace with pool & jacuzzi with fabulous panoramic views of Copacabana, Sugar Loaf & Christ the Redeemer. Our rooms had poor views but we found that didn't matter at all as we just popped up to the roof.
The rooms were very comforatable & clean with great double showers in the bathroom. Breakfast was buffet style with everything i would want including bacon & eggs etc.
The hotel booked taxis when needed & there was also a desk in the foyer where we were able to book trips. When we did our full day trip Christ the Redeemer was in fog so we hired a mini bus as there were six of us & went again the next morning & also visited a favella & other areas we wanted to see. We took a taxi on the third day to do the helicopter ride which was amazing.
Some of the staff at the hotel were pleasant & helpful but some were not so obliging

We found it quite safe at night to walk along the promenade at Copacabana & eat at the resaturants & have a drink at the bars. We found people very good humoured & pleasant & enjoyed the banter with some of the sellers of various goods from football shirts to bags etc.

We had five nights in Rio & could have stayed longer as we enjoyed it so much. It s a stunning city.We even managed an afternoon on the beach which proved enormous fun. We then moved on to Paraty about five hours south of Rio which was equally enjoyable but also quite a contrast.

Room Tip: The rooms on the front will overlook the beach but will come with a big supplement. The back left on...
