“Gorgeous Building and Views of Rio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

This hotel really exceeded our expectations. We booked here only for one night as we were flying out the next morning, but I wish we had stayed longer. Our room was very spacious and clean, the breakfast was delicious and plentiful and the views of the city from the breakfast terrace were amazing! The old building is gorgeous to walk around and it is such a quiet and relaxing atmosphere I didn't want to leave! I think if you would like to be in this area of the city (it's not so close to the more exciting parts) then this is an excellent choice.

Room Tip: We were downstairs, but it looked like the rooms upstairs had nice balconies and views.

We are extremely disapointed with our stay there. Picture this: in the middle of the night someone woke us up after having walked into our room saying that he was staying there! He had the key of the room! It was our 10th wedding aniversary we were celebrating and you all reading this can imagine how bad we felt!! There was no one at the front desk to take care of it and provide us a reasonable explanation to what was going on... We left the place in the middle of the night afraid we would not be safe staying there the rest of the night. Definitely I would never recommend this place to anyone.

We only had one night at Castelinho 38 but loved It! It had charm and character and was in a superb location to explore the delights of Santa Teresa... We'd love to go back. Breakfast on the terrace was simple but delicious, with amazing views ovet ST and beyond...

We recently staid at hotel Castelinho. The place is amazing in a charming old castle nicely situated in Santa Teresa.
People are very nice and welcoming... but our room was so small that we couldn't let our case open.
We only had cold water in the bathroom (just a dodgy electric heater on top of the shower that provides mild water).
The windows has no glass even if you have an AC.
Room was noisy but clean.
I guess other room may be better.
Avoid palmeira room.
View is wonderful from the terrasse.

We stayed for 4 nights in June 2012 and loved our time here. It's a perfect base to explore Santa Teresa and Lapa and also a very relaxed and welcoming place to hang out, day or night. As per some of the previous comments, the breakfast terrace, and the breakfast itself, was outstanding. Fantastic views and a very peaceful place to sit with a drink and read a book. We made good use of the hammocks on the upper terrace too, which get sun for most of the morning and afternoon. Room was very comfortable; basic but very clean and with good facilities. Staff were super friendly and very helpful and the 2 dogs were equally welcoming! We moved for the second part of our trip down to Ipanema and certainly your money goes further up in Santa Teresa. If you're looking to spend most of your time on the beach, then this won't be the place for you, but if you want to spend time in the older parts of Rio, at least for part of your vacation, then look no further than Castelinho. We'd love to come back!

This was our second stay in Rio, we previously stayed in Mama Ruisa just down the road in Sta Teresa and found that this was much better value for money, quiter and more relaxed with children. Santa Teresa is a great part of town, quirky and interesting with some good restaurants less than 5 mins walk from the hotel. Rooms are simple but fine, perhaps a bit on the small side, breakfast is good, evening drinks good value. Try Aprazivel restaurant 15 mins walk from the hotel, amazing food.

The terrace is outstanding, taking in the view over breakfast and coffee - no better way to start the day - or a caipirinha - no better way to end a wonderful day. The room is charming and somewhat basic (I stayed in Samambaia) so is the bathroom facilities but I did enjoy it. Breakfast is fresh and tasty, not a lot to choose from but more than enough to kick-start your day.

Marco (the owner) is very helpful and friendly, and the other staff do their best to make you happy.

I stayed three nights at Castelinho38 and on my first day I thought I had chosen a far off neighbourhood to live in. But, Rio is so big that whatever part of the city you live in, you are bound to spend 20-30 minutes to get to an attraction. Santa Teresa comes across as a safe part of Rio to stay in, and that counts for a lot.”
