“Basic Ibis hotel, on walking distance from subway”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2011

It's a typical ibis-hotel, which means: a rather basic but okay room, nothing fancy. Ideal if you only need your room to sleep in. The breakfast is basic as well, but good enough to start your day with.

This hotel is located on walking distance from the subway station "Carioca", which was an important factor in my choice for this hotel (together with the affordable price). It's a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Using the subway, you can reach many interesting points in Rio quite quickly. The subway itself is clean and offers a good service.

We stayed at this hotel during carnival. It was about AUD$160 for a double which was great value for carnival. Hostels near the beach wanted AUD$100 for a dorm bed. We had a bar fridge in our room so we were able to buy food for our breakfast. They do offer cheap breakfast and food downstairs. It was really close to the train station which was convenient for getting around during carnival because using the buses takes too long because there are people all over the streets. It is far from the beaches but the hotels near the beach cost more than double what we paid and they were only 15 minutes away on the train, so not too far. They ran all night and there was good security on the trains. I wouldn't pay the extra money to be near the beach because there are parties all over Rio during carnival.

Room Tip: Book early

We stayed here for 2 nights with carnival, before we were going on a cruise. We liked the location, we came out and were direct in the ambiance, a few minutes from Lapa, we went to the Sambadrome by foot, the subway was a few minutes from the hotel! So very central. The hotel was nothing fancy, but a good Ibis hotel, a good night rest, we had a nice breakfast, good drinks in the bar, with a good service! And they spoke good English! Rare in Brasil! So for a few nights Rio, a recommendation!

First the good stuff: the breakfast buffet and the evening buffet are both good quality, and the catering staff are a pleasant and helpful bunch.
However, on the down side: reception almost always had a queue, and hardly any of them speak English. We asked for our air-con to be fixed, and the guys came up straight away to stop it leaking, but it then carried on leaking anyway. One of the lifts was out of order. The beds were not comfortable for a 7 night stay. This is an unsafe area after dark. On 4 occasions we asked for the national drink and on 3 of these occasions were told by the bar staff that they didnt have one of the main ingredients. There are signs stating that bedding is changed every day, but it is not. They got our 2 rooms constantly mixed up so we all ended up paying for each others stuff. The worst Ibis I have ever used...not actually awful, but not up to the standard Ive seen elsewhere.

Room Tip: Do not walk to/from here after dark

The hotel is close to the Central business district (a short taxi ride) but is a bit isolated for evening entertainment. There is no gym. There is pay wi-fi in the rooms and free in the public area but it was very slow.

I stayed at this ibis just one night my purpouse to be there it was a combination of price and location, because once there, it's so easy to go anywhere downtown and neighborhood like Lapa and Santa Teresa. even you want to go to Ipanema, botafogo and Copacabana, the underground it's just 05 or 10 minutes walking to the station. And
although downtown having many types of people circulating, include some prostitutes and transvestites, I didn't consider a dangerous place to walk because there are many people doing the same thing, of course, do not use value objects to call the attention of thieves and take care of your belongings. In most, enjoy the historic center of Rio.
The rooms of ibis it was the same of others in the world, but the reception was recently reformed, The staff were attentive and helpful.
