“Terrible service. Will NOT come back.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

Booked a room in advance, got an internet rate. Our group grew as we were travelling and we asked to change the reservation and add a second room. I suppose that caused the front desk staff to see dollar signs, as they charged us almost DOUBLE (!) the rate of the original room.

Complaining didn't help much, neither did asking to talk to a manager. The first excuse was that since the 2nd room was not booked online, there is no internet discount. Then the story changed, and the second room was now a "premium" room.

The supposedly "premium" room (101) is the closest to the lobby area and had no hot water, noisy a/c, 'window' - to the main corridor, and an all-night atmosphere noise from the hostel lobby bar.

We ended up paying approx. US$100 for the second room - definitely not hostel prices, closer to hotel prices. For this price you can definitely do better.

I also have my doubts about the cleanliness of this establishment - I woke up all itchy and with red eyes. I wasn't at all surprised to find a note taped to the room door, asking us to make sure that all luggage is on the beds, as they will be fumigating the next day.

Location is okay, but that's about it. Stay away if you want to enjoy your time in Rio.

Fantastic location: view over the Christ from the lounge/ breakfast room area.; just minute away from the underground which takes you everywhere in Rio, including 5 minutes trip to Copacabana, markets and Ipanema beach; Botofago Stadion on the doorstep with great view over Sugar Loaf and beautiful sunset;
Clean rooms, towels provided, perfect Wifi connection; unexpectedly good breakfast for hostel - some 3 star hotels could learn from it. Felt safe as well

I would definitely recommend the private room with bathroom. The shared bathroom was not as clean. Our rooms were very clean and very comfortable. It has a nice bar area which is great to utilize. We did have to pay to store our bags and use their shower after we checked out, which isn't common for a lot of hostels in Brazil. The best part about this hostel is the location. It was close to the metro which made it VERY convenient. Staff were friendly and there are many places to eat nearby.

Our double room was dirty on arrival. The toilet was full of brown water and and bin was full of used toilet paper. After speaking to a member of staff at the desk we were placed in a room with bunk beds because the cleaning staff were not around. The electric shower did not work so we had cold showers. We asked for a discount the next day, because we did not stay in the room that we had paid for. The manager was extremely cold and hostile. He laughed at us and offered us a 10 R$ discount. He then proceeded to tell us that 'double room' meant a room for 2 people, not a room with a double bed. Apparently we were supposed to specify that we wanted a double bed on the actual booking. At no point had this been indicated, every other booking I have ever made for a double room has meant a double bed. He clearly knew this was the case but thought he might be able to get away with it. He also said that we had no reason to complain as the room they had switched us to had a minibar and TV (which we had not even used and did not require). After mentioning the cold showers, he did not believe us and went to go check it himself, slamming doors as he went. He shouted at us saying that because we were European we did not understand how to use Brazilian showers, despite the fact that we had been travelling in Brazil for 3 weeks prior to staying at this hostel and had not yet experienced cold showers during this time. Upon checking the shower, he realised that it was in fact broken. He remained hostile and gave us the option of leaving the hostel and having a refund for part of our previous night's stay and the next two nights. However, having only 2 nights left in an unfamiliar city the last thing we wanted was to waste our time trying to find another place to stay last minute. We had no choice but to stay and accept a mere 38 R$ discount for the first night. We were then moved to a very small double room which smelt of damp, but at least it had been cleaned. The staff at the desk obviously felt bad for us and they were very understanding throughout which helped to make us feel a bit more welcome after such a horrible experience.

Our private room with bathroom was clean, and the location was great. It was next to the metro, which made getting to Copacabana a 15 proposition, and it was around the corner from a great churrascaria. Staff were very nice.

We very much enjoyed our stay here, the staff were very friendly, helped organise trips for us and recommended places to eat and visit. The hostel was very clean and well maintained and we felt quite safe walking around the area. There were many places to eat nearby and a good shopping centre, also the metro was close and buses going to Copacabana passed by the hostel regularly. The breakfast was very good, with a lot of variety. I would recommend this hostel for any young travellers who are looking for somewhere with a great cost benefit.

The location is great, very close to Botafogo metro station. You are in 15min in Copacabana/Ipanema by metro and also in 10min in the center taking the other direction. There is supermarket close by and many restaurants/bars around Botafogo, so also lively in the evening. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and always in a good mood. Internet was working properly and free of charge.
I had a private room and the window was only to corridor, hence you might here people passing by. Although the hostel was fully booked, I had no problems with any noise. They charge you R$10 for leaving your luggage after checkout, although it's stated as free on their flyer.
