“It worth the time.”

If you enjoy Portuguese tiles, you will love this church.
They were all restored by a Portuguese bank some years ago.

“Certainly within the 3 Top Churches in Rio - Definitely a Must”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2011

Baroque church inaugurated in Rio in 1740, is famous among other attributes, for having serving the Emperor of Brazil and his family, Peter the I ( Dom Pedro) as his favorite. All the Royal family was baptized at the "Gloria Chuch" as it is popularly known. Recently, the Church received a vital renovation, with almost US$ 700,000 of investment. The main is made in wood, and some of it, covered with gold. The Gloria Church is also famous because of its hand-painted tiles in blue and white, which came directly from Portugal and is attributed to the legendary "Master!" Valentim de Almeida. The Church was also a fortification, in which the Portuguese, in one of the important battles, expelled the French invader from Rio. For all of these reasons, the Imperial Church represents a unique Architectural importance, a significant Marian pilgrimage site of the Catholic Faith, all intertwined with the history of Brazil. Fianally, the view form the outside patio is amazing, for we can see the Guanabara bay, Niteroi, and Rio Airport.
