“Beneath the flash veneer, service and apartments lacked attention”

Princess Copacabana

Once past the flashy reception and the ´show´ apartment that we viewed before booking, this place was a real disapointment. The pool was closed for ´maintenance´, not something that was mentioned when we viewed the hotel, but only after we had paid. The steam room, jacuzzi and sauna were only switched-on on request, which meant waiting 2-3 hours for the temperatures to rise, each time. The kitchen had 2 gas hobs and a microwave but only plates and cutlery, I had to request what I assumed was missing and was presented with ONE pan, I then want back and requested another pan and a wooden spoon, which was, in fairness bought to the room, along with two tea cups, but it was a ´no´ on other items I would expect for an apartment with kitchen. There was a fancy ice bucket and ice tongues but no ice tray in which to make ice, a corksrew but no wine glasses, a coffee maker but only tiny expresso cups, a tea towel, but no dishcloth or detergent, three wardrobes but only 6 coathangers....I could go on..... Although the place looks like it has been recently refurbished, and it is clean and modern, there has been no thought or attention to how the apartments will be used, and it felt like a constant battle to have to ask for detergent, cups, pans, to turn on the sauna, all things that should have been checked and provided as a matter of course. The staff were never rude, but never apologetic either. We sat around for an hour or so waiting for them to fix the jacuzzi, after we inisited it wasnt working, but even then it would have been another 3 hours for the temperature to rise enough to be able to get in, and they never acknowledged the inconvenience. Then today they have switched it off again, so we will need to switch it on and wait anouther 3 hours for it to heat up !! As I say, a real disapointment, and the staff really dont seem to realise or care. I think that once we parted with the payment, we were no longer of any interest to them whatsoever, there was no effort to make our stay enjoyable or pleasurable, and all for 300 reals a night ! , so not a cheap place.

“Great spot but getting very pricy”

I have stayed at this property every year since 2003. If I'm not mistaken it openned in November of 2002. It really is a sweet spot. The suites are like studio apartments. They are nice and spacious. They include a stove refridgerator, micro waive, dining table, sofa, and if you have a balcony there is furniture out there as well. It is a contemporary design with white tile floors and granite in the bath and the kitchen. The hotel has about 11 floors and there are about 6 to 8 rooms on each floor.

It's located 2 blocks from Copacabana beach, behind the Rio Othon. The neighborhood is very nice, there are Juice stores on the corner and plenty of opportunities to sample the local food from the various restaurants nearby. There are barber shop and manicur shops in the neighborhood as well. The post office is 3 blocks away. The staff has always been friendly and very helpful, and they remembered us after ther 1st visit.

One good thing is that if you are a single male staying there, they will allow you to have over night guest, and when your guest leaves they will call you to make sure that every thing is ok.
The down side of this place is the pricing. In 2003 we paid about $850.00 for 9 nights. In 2007 i paid $1,750.00 (hotel only) for the Carnival package alone. My friends and I have reserved as many as 9 rooms there and they wouldn't give a discount. All of us were staying at least 7 nights others stayed 10. With the decline of the US dollar and the rise of the Brazilian Real, the hotel has been raising its' prices almost 20% each year.

They do have a swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi, whirlpool, and a workout room. This hotel is part of the Promenade hotels chain. If it wasn't for the Hotel rates during Carnival I would rate this place as excellent.

I stayed at the Princess Copacabana for 3 days and it was fantastic. The room I had was a suite and the staff was awesome. They gave me directions, restaurants, take out, sites to see, etc. The place was immaculately cleaned everyday and they are one of the few hotels that allow guests without any hassle. I will stay here again this November when I go back to Rio.

“Loved the Princess Copacabanna, Rio”

Princess Copacabana

This was my first of hopefully many trips to Rio. The Princess is immaculate. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and really makes you feel welcome. The staff keeps an eye out for all comings and goings and makes one feel very safe.

The rooms were recently re done and look brand new. Each room is a suite with a sitting area, desk, kitchen w/microwave, stove and refriderator. Mini bar prices are negligible and beds are wonderfuly inviting.

Additonally, the mondern bathrooms contain glass stand-up showers that sparkle.

This facility has everything you will need in Copacabanna: Location - 2 safe, pleasant blocks from the beach, Staff- Knowlegleable, Friendly and English speaking, Facility - Modern, Clean, Comfortable, Shopping- At your door step, Grocery/Pharmacy - At your door step. Night Life - Just around the corner.

And oh yeah, Free Breakfast all for under US$90/day. 4 Stars in anybodys book.
