“A very typical Copacabana Beach beer garden”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

Taberna Atlântica is one more restaurant along the almost 4km sidewalk of Copacabana Beach. Pretty much like all others, Taberna Atlântica has been there for a long, long time and keeps it's own traditional standards. But, at the same time, it has an air of a neighborhood bar, where locals go to enjoy a cold beer (a "chopp"), typical Brazilian appetizers and, eventually, have family dinners. Its non-pretentious kitchen offers a wide variety of dishes, generous portions and reasonable prices. No gastronomy or fusion kitchen, but honest food. The waiters have been there for years and know frequent clients by their name. Mr. Ximenes is one of them, a very fine gentleman, with gray hair, and pretty much praised by his very many clients/friends. I like that. Give it a try. Enjoy!

“An average restuarant on the Avenida Atlantica”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

There are a number of restaurants along the Avenida Atlantica along side the Copacabana Beach in Rio, and this is one of them. They are all very similar, and a pleasant place to spend a few hours with friends eating and sipping a beer or some wine. Main courses are in the $20 - $40 range, and the portions are surprisingly large. Maybe Brazilians are closet Americans, because one thing that impressed me in the restaurants were the more-then-ample portion sizes of whatever I or my friends ordered. I ordered what appeared to be a small cup of soup for a starter and found that it could have served as an entire meal! The fish portions were huge! The ambiance is that most people sit out under the canopies to dine al fresco. If you are along the edges, as I was (because one of my dinner companions smoked - yuk!), you are prey for all the souvenir folks and old men doing incredible soccer ball tricks. They can be quite aggressive, but are actually pretty good-natured. We had vendors trying to sell us flowers, necklaces, soccer shirts, soccer balls, and commemorative trinkets. My favorite, though, was a very old man who did the most amazing tricks with a soccer ball. He was the only one that I gave any money to, and it was worth it for the show that he put on. In some places, thiese sort of people can be annoying; along the Avenida, they are pretty benign and even spice up the dining experience a little.
The food atht eh TA was very tasty and fairly priced. The waiter was very efficient, and spoke English well, although the level of Spanish-speaking was low (I speak fluent Spanish, which I found useful for talking with the taxi drivers). It was a wonderful meal that I had, wonderful because the food was tasty and interesting, the outdoor dining with the beach across the road most pleasant, and the price fair.

“Not very good”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

I did not have a good experience at this place, even though I've given it a few chances. Simply bad food. Go for the chopp if you're really thirsty and want to be by the beach. But that's about it.
