“middling”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

Located in a pleasant residential neighborhood close to Rio’s Botanical Garden, Lorenzo Bistrô is a fine location for a Sunday lunch. The service is friendly, but it can be difficult to get the waiter’s attention at times. The menu is French / Italian inspired with attractive selections such as ‘La pêche provençale’. This dish is attributed to the famous French chef Roger Verger and consists of grilled ‘namorado’ (a large ocean fish of the perch family, called ‘boyfriend fish’ in Portuguese) on a bed of pureed eggplant and a small portion of ratatouille spread on top. The eggplant bits were tasty, but the fish arrived at the table rather dry and overcooked. Another diner at our table had ‘La pêche du confraire Didier,’ which turned out to be the very same fish with shrimp and lemon butter. This hid more effectively the overdone preparation of the fish. Various other dishes ordered at our table were all satisfactory, but nothing really special. We had several deserts, such as pear crumble with butterscotch sauce, that were reasonably tasty. The naming of the deserts on the menu is quite imaginative (‘memorable chocolate cake’, for one). The prices struck us as in-line with an upscale Rio restaurant. In summary, we had a pleasant Sunday afternoon, but were not overly impressed by the quality of the cooking.

“excellent French/Italian food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

This nice and charming restaurant is located right next to the botanical garden in a quite street.

The menu is a mix of French and Italian dishes and ask looked delicious. The lasagne was very tasty, the pumpkin ravioli delicious, the mussels big and juicy... In general the did and all its ingredients tested extremely fresh and authentic!

The service was perfect as well. A bit pricey for Rio but you eat well.

“Neighborhood feel and good (but pricey) food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

Like most good restaurants in Rio, Lorenzo's Bistrot is not cheap, but the charm of this three story house makes up for it. The service is good and attentive, and the menu offers a wide variety of dishes ranging from mushroom risottos and seafood pastas to a sweet style duck. A great place for a date, or celebratory evening with friends.

“Fair Value or a Reasonable Rip Off??”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

The Lorenzo Bistro is situated on a busy road in the Jardim Botanico district of Rio de Janeiro. The restaurant, on three floors, is pleasant and comfortable. The wine list is readable but expensive and the menu inviting. Three of us forewent a starter (at an average of US$25 a shot it looked expensive) and one had the salmon starter as a main dish. The food arrived and everybody enjoyed their meal except that the portions were about the size of a modest starter. For example the "Il Classico: cottechino con lenticchie" arrived as three very thin and small slices of cottechino sausage on a bed of lentils. At US$30 the dish, while flavoursome, carried the distinct taste of a rip off. The Ravioli and Polpettone (the later being a medium sized meatball with tomato sauce mashed potato - one spoonfull) at about US$25 a shot each, again flavoured of a rip-off. Three slices of smoked salmon and a blini or two at about US$15 rounded off the sensation that we had spent a fortune for a very meagre meal. This place calls itself a bistro not a mega sophisticated michelin restaurant so one might expect moderately priced, hearty but simple food. It was simple alright but far from hearty and absurdly overpriced. We did not see a waiting line of hundreds waiting to eat, so demand would not appear to be an issue. The fact is that this bistro, like so many other Rio restaurants, has gone wildly overboard in it's pricing and value for money. If you enjoy eating out and hope to have a flavoursome meal avoid this bistrô - the taste of a rip off is overpowering.
