See my review of Ipanema Beach, you can walk the long curve of both beaches, divided only by a small inlet. Drink the icy cocunut water on the beach and people watch, then head inland a block or two towalk the tree lined sidewalks for a real middle class lifestyle. Well ok, the rich are here too. You will feel safe. Just keep your eyes open.
We stayed on three separate occasions in three and a half weeks in Rio on our trip around Brasil. On two of those occasions we stayed in Copacabana and only walked along the front of Leblon, which we thought was in our view nicer than Copacabana, the shops in the road behind were more extensive and the restaurants were better. Possibly Leblon was slightly less 'buzzy' than Cop Beach, but for oldies like us, that would have suited us fine!
Beautiful beach and shoppings! Excellent food and nice people. More expensive than the average prices, but it worths it!
I do not if it is because of the legendary song the Girl from Ipanema, but for sure the Ipanema beach is a better destination that the Leblon one. Let's put it this way in terms of the beaches of the Zona Sul of Rio, the Ipanema beach is the real thing in terms of charm, beautiful people, and overall atmosphere!
Theis is where all the yummy mummies bring their children. It has a little more space, more vender noise, but it is possible to relax, the water is cleaner than Copa and you have more space. Best beach in town for children and parents.
