“Small but impressive!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

We were toured the monastery on Sunday and enjoyed the beauty of the sanctuary filled with people celebrating mass...just wish we could have understood the language! It really is a jewel tucked into an unlikely exterior! Definitely worth a stop.

“This was unbelievable amazing!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

I booked a tour by "Michael serruya guide from the tours by local" , a very good tour guide. Beside his good knowledge about the history of all the momuments, he is a nice person who takes good care of his clients. The monastery was for me very impressive and emotional. The art, the story behind this church dated 1600 made me silent and brings me back to time. This a real diamond in the center of RIO. This is a nice place to pray and have some QT with yourself. I don't think that my trip to RIO would be complete without this visit to the monastery Sao Bento.

“A wonderful small Monastery in the heart of Rio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2013

I visited this church with a small group of friends while in a conference in Rio. Although being Brazilian, I never been there before and I'm glad I did that. It's a small Benedictine church dated from 1590, which didn't impress from outside, but that gives you a wonderful surprise when entering.

The walls are covered on nicely carved wood and the altar is beautifully decorated in gold. The Monastery has this quite environment that seems to place you back in time. The Monastery has daily service early in the morning with Gregorian chanting, which we unfortunately lost by doing first another visit in the city.

“World Heritage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2013

Mosteiro de Sao Bento is one of the small barroque jewels you can find in Brasil. Showing a strong contrast with its simple exterior walls, the interior is richly decorated. You can reach the Monastery and Church either by car, thru a small alley that takes you around the slope, or by the elevator that serves the administrative building. As you approach the sanctuary you can almost forget that you are in the central area of Rio, surrounded by buildings and the buzz of downtown commercial area... This place is a small retreat, with beautiful trees and gardens. You can also attend a special mass on Sundays, when the choir performs religious songs in angels voice.
