We booked for two nights at Rio Hostel Santa Teresa in order to be in a more central location, and because we had previously stayed at Rio Hostel Ipanema (same owners). Santa Teresa has a reputation for being an artist's hangout, it's a big contrast with the Zona Sul beach suburbs (Ipanema, Copacabana, Leblon). We found that although we were closer to a lot of bars, clubs, theatres, etc., we didn't feel safe going out after dark, the area brings a lot of risks with it, so that was a downside. But it was nice hanging out at the hostel, it is a huge old house, well-maintained, and a lot of character. Note that because this hostel is located on a hill, there are a lot of stairs to climb from the street to the main level. (There's a small lift which doesn't always work, but if you have heavy luggage, you should enquire about this.) They have very spacious and well-equiped kitchens for guests, with individual cupboards to put your groceries. Best of all, they have a cute resident housecat called Lola (see photo). It is a big hostel, but still maintains its friendliness. I feel that the breakfast could have been a lot better. There was a limited range of fruit, sometimes it ran out and then there was none. Just a few teas to choose from, only sliced bread. Coffee, ham, cheese, but pretty basic. There was a really strange, quite unpleasant smell in the Orange Room (four-bed dorm) which may have been related to the mildew on the walls. Also, the extractor fan in the bathroom was automatic, and if someone used the bathroom at night, the fan stayed on for what seemed an eternity, stopping you from getting a good night's rest. The staff were kind of disinterested and some of them inefficient at times, and I had to remind them several times to book a transfer to the bus station for us (for which they earn commission) so that we could catch our bus on time. It's a nice hostel, all in all, but I think they could make it better with little effort.

Room Tip: The good thing about this hostel is that there is a large variety of rooms to choose from, whichever...

The Rio Hostel is a really nice place to stay. Location is perfect and the whole crew is very friendly (special thanks to the manager Luigi ;))!! The Hostel is extremely clean and spacious. They serve a really good breakfast and if you don't want to go out, they have a nice bar in the Hostel.
You can choose between a private or shared room. There is a accommodation for any requirement!
I absolutely recommend the Rio Hostel. 100% positive experience!!

Great, room, great attention. The hostel is clean, well organised. The view was amazing, good places to drink a beer are close to the hostel. Maybe I'll find some days a breakfast outside the hostel, cause is always the same.

Room Tip: I choose the highest floor in the hostel the view was just perfect.

The hostel itself is OK; rooms and beds are comfy, its clean, there are kitchen facilities and computers with internet. The price is right for a hostel in Brazil and the location St Teresa/Lapa is very good.

Still I did NOT have a good experience! This has everything to do with the staff, who are just so incredibly unfriendly and disinterested.. It's like everything you go ask something at the reception you're bothering them, because obviously they have better things to do than listen to you! They made us change rooms several times and would tell people the hostel was full while it clearly wasn't, a very disorganized system. Then my sneakers and sweater were stolen (from the room and the drying rack) and the staff just couldn't care less about it.. I would advice everybody to go to BOSSA in RIO hostel:it's just a little bit more up in the street and is everything that Rio hostel is only MUCH BETTER (very good atmosphere and staff)!

We were in a double room with bathroom, without hot water and very small size, close to the kitchen and with noise all night long.
Poor Breakfast and no service at all.
At night the best option is to take a taxi because is a dangerous area.

There are beautiful views over Rio from this top-floor hostel. The beds were comfy, the facilities all in place, and I liked Rio Hostel's style. Although I didn't make any use of either, there's a bar and a swimming pool on the roof, so if you get a crowd together, there's that potential for a fun night in. When you head out, a 5-min bus ride takes you from the entrance straight to the cafes of St Teresa, and after a 5 min walk you're down in Lapa.
