“Not only Centro Cultural. Downtown is fantastic.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

Most people go to Rio to enjoy the sun and the beaches. Going to Rio in July is beautiful, and visiting downtown with its ancient churches, beautiful museums and fantastic restaurants is priceless. Walk down Primeiro de Março and see the old Cathedral, Banco do Brasil and the Paço Imperial. Take a look at Arco do Teles and have fried sardines and beer. Check the Candelaria Cathedral on Presidente Vargas. Go down Rio Branco Avenue to reach Cinelândia, where you can find the Theater, the Library and Amarelinho, where you can have refreshments. Lapa is the place to be if you like dancing. The ancient Arches are special. If you want to have another view of the city, visiting downtown is a must.

“Biggest Disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

During our time in Rio the Centro Cultural was the biggest disappointment in terms of attractions of all the sites we visited. It was nice to walk to the center of the building and enjoy the domes that make up the middle of the building. The architecture is impressive, especially considering that it was once a functioning bank. In modern times it would be unlikely for so much space to be designated for asthetics on the inside of a commercial building, which makes it unique and worth a look.

Other than a quick look at the domes, we didn't find much to interest us here. There were two main exhibits, one of the history of Brazilian coins and the other on animation of cartoons. I'm not much interested in either, even when it pertains to my own culture (the history of US coins would not be a sold out exhibition in my home town) so we ended up looking around for about fifteen minutes and decided not to visit either exhibit. The other parts of the building consisted of an overpriced coffee stand and a nice bookstore that was fun to browse around.

I would suggest visiting as the guidebook I was using called it the "gem" of Rio, but be forewarned that the exibits might cater to a niche market and not suited to everyone's tastes.

“Real Surprise - great building, buzzy, interesting area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Presume this was the Central Bank Head Office - worth visiting just to see the inside.- now a cultural centre. Always something on - currently (April 2013) a really great exhibition on Animation and Cartoons prob 40 or so different cartoons all on at the same time from 21st C to Bits of Snow White, MM etc etc. On the next fllor really good photos of Rio. Also has a permanent exhibition of the history of Money - shame nothing in English but as it is free worth looking through but better at the other end you can walk through 5 of the Directors Offfices as they were circa 1900's - very evocative - especially if the rooms are empty - were when I went.
Small Coffee Stand (nice Coffee Area in the Casa Franca immediately next door) If in the area visit the Centro Cultural Correios right next door (Also reviewed)

“Great place...but facility not used to max potential”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

The building was very nice and exhibits just ok. Having read reviews before visiting I was expecting more...but was let down. Thought they could have put more effort into all exhibits. The building was beautiful...lots of people to provide security and information...but everything else was average to below average. We checked the block off sites to see in Rio at this place and moved on.

“How good it is depends on the exhibition”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

A great building that houses exhibitions. Depending on the topic will depend on how much you enjoy your experience. Our visit was good enough - focusing on Movie animation. And a different treat of on the ground floor of being able to create our own sand art
