We made a special effort to see the Theatre. One inside, we had a guide for the english speakers who were just my wife and I.......a private guide.
The theater is beautiful and the history is interesting.

“Try to see a performance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

Stunning opera house --try to see a performance-- beautiful in all ways. If you go during the Brazilian summer (December for us), note that the air conditioning is not all that effective everywhere in the house, but it's still worth it.

“A truly beautiful theatre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

While we had some confusion about getting a number, then standing in a line and buying tickets in the process, we finally got in. Note - you get a number, then you go to buy a ticket, then you stand in line. We had a language barrier issue, which was sorted out.
This is a beautiful building, that attention to the details is amazing. We had an English tour. The guide's English was pretty good. The best part was that is was not a canned speech she was giving. She was telling the story of the theater and asking for questions from the group, which would lead to more stories about the building. This is a must see and good for a rainy day.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012 via mobile

The guided tours are at 10,11,12, 2,3 and 4. Cost R$10 each. You can get your ticket half an hour before, no earlier by collecting your token from the man at the gate to the left of the building. The tour lasted about 45 minutes and was done in english by a very nice lady. Definitely worth seeing. Beautiful building and some interesting brazilian history!

“If the Fox Theater in Atlanta and the Paris Opera House had a child”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

Spectacularly opulent. Recent extensive renovations. They are very proud of what they've done to bring this place back to it's former glory and they should be. It's a bizarre mashup of architectural styles that somehow works. I had English-speaking tour guide provided by the facility who was quite knowledgable.
It was 90 F outside in December and they were rehearsing The Nutcracker in the theater which only added to the mind-bending historical enjoyment of the tour. I wanted to photograph everything I saw. Cariocas seem to be proud of being cultured and this turn of the last century jewel is something to be extremely proud of.
