“More than I expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

I had the free time, and low expectations.. but was stunned and amazed at this inexpensive enlightening tour. The location takes time and a little local knowledge to find - but the two hours admiring the incredible talent of Burle Marx was more than I imagined. Go if you love plants, the outdoors, art, collecting..

“Amazing house and superb gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

This is something completely unexpected - about a 45 minutes drive from Ipanema but a really worth it - Burle Marx was a famous architect whose style harmonised with the surrounding nature!

“Well worth the effort, wonderful ground breaking gardens and beautiful house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

Interesting and excentric multi talented and ground breaking garden designer musician, singer and artist created this wonderful tropical garden from a banana plantation on a hilly boulder strewn site. he created what looks like an inca remain from bits of demolished rio house and it is now a waterfall beside the lovely colonial house. He pioneered planting in big banks of the same plant and has created a wonderful and inspiring place to live.
Guided tours must be booked in advance at 9.30 or 1.30 and are in Portuguese (except for friday in english) but no problem , they give you the guide text in English. Long way out but well worth hiring a driver for the day and also seeing the Casa do Pontal and lunch at the wonderful Bira de Guatariba restaurant

“special”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

took me nine years to get there, but i'm glad i did....... a bit of a hassle having to book a tour etc, but do it -- a very personal and private place -- clearly burle marx' vision -- and so great some of his original gardeners still work there -- a genuine and heart-warming experience -- not to mention the gorgeous nature.....
