“Terrible Room, Depressing Hallway”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

I had an awful room and I even switched from a worse one!!
Though clean, the bathroom had a plastic shower liner as a curtain and no hook on the door. The window overlooked an air shaft and had plastic curtain liners and would not pull all the way open. The linens were not very nice. The closet door could not open all the way as it hit the bed. There were pipes in the hall had plastic bags on them. There was renovation going on. The gym is a joke, three old machines crammed in a small room. The staff was decent and the fruit at breakfast nice, but the linens on table dirty. It is a 10 minute cab ride to a beach where you can swim (Copacabana) and fronts a noisy street, with highway beyond. I would not stay here again. I have friends who have had a nice stay in an upper floor room, but given the rooms I saw those rooms are rare!!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else! Or at least demand a picture of your room!! And find out if there is construc...

The best thing I can say about this hotel is that of the other hotels nearby in which I've stayed, this is the nicest. That said, the rooms are tired and could use some updating. The "gym" is laughable - a single treadmill and stationary bike. There is no pool. The wireless Internet is spotty at best.

The service is fine - staff are friendly and speak English. The breakfast is good - plenty of fruits, juices, eggs, etc. I've had dinner here once and it is passable but nothing extraordinary.

The location is pretty good - there's easy access to the large park and beach along Praia do Flamingo. Across the street are the gardens of Catete Palace, the one-time Presidential Palace of Brazil when Rio was the capital. And down the street is the Catete Metro Station, which allows traffic-free access to Copacabana and Ipanema in less than 20 minutes.

If you need to be in Flamengo or Gloria, this is probably one of the better places to stay. But for the same price, you can go elsewhere and do no worse (and maybe better).

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side of the building will have views of the Catete Palace Gardens, Sugarloaf, an...

This is an old, but well preserved and maintained hotel. Good choice to stay for business purposes because it is close to Rio's south zone (Botafogo, Flamengo, Copacabana, Leblon).

Last Thursday I was looking for a nice place to have breakfast to celebrate Mothers Day in Rio central area. Unfortunately there are not many places who market appropriately and at the same time has a nice view. So I decided to check the "Hotel Novo Mundo", at the Flamengo Beach.

Until 6 months ago, the restaurant was terrible, both in terms of service and decor. Now it has been completely renovated. There is a very cozy bar& piano bar, with velvet sofas and armchairs, neighbor to the restaurant, where lunch is also served daily.

But back to the breakfast, for R$ 36,00 per person you can have an amazing breakfast, with a mega buffet, all types of breads, fruits, cereals, juices, hot meals, and a very good strong coffee.

There is also a nice view too to the "Palacio da Republica Museum Garden". Definitively recommend for such a price/ value. The service was very good too, and improved significantly from last year. ( maybe they hired new staff, dont know. )

The room that I had was a little tired and could have done with some basic upgrading particularly to the air con unit which was only just hanging in.

The view from the room however couldn't be beaten overlooking Guanabara Bay, Sugar Loaf, Niteroi and Santos Dumont airport.

Whilst not a problem for me some people would find the front facing rooms a little noisy with the main Aterra de Flamengo and Beira Mar roads passing in close proximity. Don't forget the occasional jet noise from SDU Airport.
The noise though means easy access to all parts of Rio and within 5 - 10 minutes you can be in either Centro or Copacabana / Ipanema. There is also a metro station (Catete) less than 5 minutes walk from the hotel.

The hotel is great for business and this makes the majority of its customers. The lack of pool and being able to sit out does make the hotel rather limiting.

The piano bar area is pleasant enough serving drinks at reasonable prices. Snacks are available in the bar area and on Tuesday nights the hotel has live music playing in the bar (free entry).
The restaurant is the usual Brasilian hotel offering of a buffet which is neither good nor bad, my advice is go out and eat. This advice applies to virtually every hotel you will find in Rio there are some many great restaurants you would be foolish to eat in.

Its always the small things that irritate you and not being able to take a drink up to my room that had been purchased in the bar at the end of the night was annoying. In the end the lady let me take it up if I transferred my drink into a plastic cup. Obviously they have had a lot of cup thefts I would guess but nobody could tell me why. This wasn't a question of lost in translation as I speak fluent Portugese. Overall not a deal breaker just irritating and rather petty.

You can normally get a better deal when compared to other Rio hotels of the same standard.

Room Tip: The front rooms are noisier but have a brilliant view of the Bay

This hotel is a taxi ride (or subway) to almost anywhere. You can walk about 10 minutes to a beach, but to get to Ipanema or Copacabana requires transportation. The rooms are nice and the service is good. This is a reasonable place to stay. The hotel restaurant has buffet meals that are pretty good. There is a restaurant a few steps down the street called Santa Fe which is good but on the expensive side.

Room Tip: You probably have to be on the 6th floor or above to get a view of the beach
