“Reasonable place in ipanema.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013

Hotel Vermont is a reasonably priced hotel in Ipanema. Nothing fancy, but clean small rooms, a staff that generally speaks English and is very helpful, and a great location just two blocks from the beach. The elevators are amazingly small, and would certainly be a problem for disabled travelers. The rooms are plain, tiny bathrooms, and loud air conditioners, but more affordable than most other hotels in the area. A good choice for travelers not wanting to pay several hundred dollars a night to stay near the beach.

Room Tip: Stay in the main part of the hotel...not the back section. The view improves in the upper floors (f...

I stayed at Hotel Vermont for 3 nights in October 2013 with one other person as part of a trip around Brazil. We didn't have a reservation to stay but was able to walk-up and get a room at a rate similar to what I had noticed online through my research. The desk staff spoke English and were friendly and helpful with directions and other information, including assisting with excursions and storing our baggage while we were exploring the city before leaving. The breakfast was included and was plentiful and very good with an assortment of meats, pastries, fruits and beverages. Outside of the dining area were two computers with free internet. The location was very good, two short blocks from the beach with multiple options to choose from for dining, bars, shopping and banks. I felt safe walking and going out in the area, day and night. The room was a bit utilitarian, resembling more of a dorm room than hotel, while the hallways were quite narrow. In addition the bathroom had an older style and unattractive feel which could use an upgrade. However, for the value, staff and location I would stay here again and recommend others to do the same since there is a lot to do in Rio to see and do.

We payed slightly more for one of the newly refurbished rooms
on the 8th floor (newly modelled bathroom) and was very happy
with our choice, even though we didn't spend that much time in the room.
The hotel looked small and cramped and quite old upon entering, and the two lifts
were tiny and cramped! but once in the room we were quite surprised how large the room
was and also a generous size, modern bathroom. Beds were comfy and together with
an inroom safe, fridge and tv we had everything we needed for a very pleasent stay.
Check in and out was swift and easy (a room became available for 12 noon, which was much appreciated)
Location is on a very busy street with constant traffic, surrounded by restaurants, bars, shops, banks etc. and only a few minutes to Ipanema beach.
Taxis were plentiful and very cheap (although the driving is nothing less than scary!) The worst
driving I've experienced in any city around the world! Buses were also frequent and also very cheap but seemed to take forever due to traffic jams.
The area around the Vermont hotel felt safe at night and there are plenty restaurants within a short walk. Would stay here again if ever in Rio, it's still an expensive choice for such a basic
hotel, but much cheaper than others in the area!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front are on a very busy street with constant traffic noise. The top two floors house...

We stayed 3 nights earlier this week and loved the location. The hotel is in the heart of Ipanema, on the main shopping street (Rua Visconde de Piraja) so there are always lots of people and action (safe location). The buses heading north (to Copacabana and Centro) all run along this one way street as well so there is lots of traffic noise. Ipanema beach is a very short 2 blocks or 5 minute walk away. The bus coming back from Centro runs along the street one block east of Rua Visconde de Piraja. We easily walked south to Leblon and north to Copacabana

The positives of the hotel are:
Great location- mentioned above
Inexpensive- at least for Ipanema; this was the cheapest hotel, with decent reviews, I could find.
Everyone at the front desk speaks some English as do most of the bellboys
Complementary breakfast had lots of fruit, yogurt, hot items (eggs, bacon) and sweet pastries and the people who worked in the restaurant were very friendly. We also never had a problem finding a table to have breakfast ar.
Room was clean, and had safe.
Bus stop was just across street and down the block and easy to take bus to Centro, Botofogo, Copacabana...we even took the bus to visit Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado. At only 2.75 Reals per ride, it was much cheaper than taxis.
Allowed us to check in early (12 noon).

The negatives of the hotel are:
Front desk staff never cracked a smile
Rooms are small and washrooms even smaller
My room looked out into a inner bleak courtyard and was somewhat noisy (rooms facing street would even be noisier.
Bath towels, sheets and pillow cases are worn and need replacing
The only subway stop in Ipanema (General Osorio) is closed, as the subway is being extended further into Ipanema and therefore, a very long walk to the next subway stop in Copacobana.
Hotel undergoing renovations and the stairwell was closed during our visit
Super small elevators
Hotel is not handicap accessible as you have to go up a flight of stairs before the elevators.

As most of hotels in Rio nowadays, they are expensive. Vermont is no exception, and you would expect to have more for what you pay, but this is Brazil. The hotel is fine. It's clean. Rooms are ok, with Cable TV, safebox, minifridge. It's not fancy, but it works. It's location is excellent, since you are right in Ipanema, on a main street, and they give you towels for the beach. Breakfast is very good. My only problem was that sometimes hot water didn't work properly.

As some have indicated, this hotel offers fairly modest accommodations. As a North American who's stayed in anything from a Ritz-Carlton to a Super8, this hotel worked fine for my trip. Wasn't fancy, but it was clean, well run and a great value.

Hotel staff was extremely professional and resourceful (particularly Elisabet at the front desk, whose was fluent in English). Breakfasts each morning were tasty and satisfying.

Only concern here was that the beds were quite hard. That took a little getting used to. Fortunately we were so pleasantly tired from seeing the glorious sights in Rio that we had no trouble falling asleep each night.

Don't miss Vero, the excellent gelato shop just a couple doors down from the hotel.

I am not sure where to start. The room I stayed was smalll and the bathroom was smaller. I barelly fitted in the shower. The place is old. I had to plug the TV and the remote control only worked in one location (because the receptor was hidden behind the furniture). The location is great, but once you remember that you have to sleep in the hotel.....

Caro Sr.,
