“Well-located, acceptable lodgings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

We stayed at the Paysandu before a cruise and selected it for location, price, and because the T.A. reviews were OK. It was what we expected: an older hotel that largely caters to middle-class Latin Americans. The staff were nice and helpful but I endorse other comments about Internet service and the charge for it. The buffet breakfast has variety but needs more fruit. Would we stay here again? Probably not, but for two nights it was acceptable.

Really well located close to Flamengo Beach. Main road it on the bus route for airport, Ipanema and Copacabana. Good restaurants and bars nearby. You must visit Belmonte - 5 mins walk and fantastic food and service (out of the hotel, turn right, right at end of the road and you'll find it!)

Pleasant and friendly. The building is an interesting art deco design with really lovely features. The staff were very friendly and there was a good breakfast selection.
The room itself was very basic but clean and comfortable, the air con wasn't too powerful...8/10

The only good thing about this place is that a few of the staff are friendly. This place was very expensive for a old boring plain room with windows that barely shut. All the latches didn't work correctly, the toilet barely flushed and we had to tip cups fully of water to actually help it drain anything. The bathroom sink barely drained away so most of the time our sink was full of old water that had old hair(somebody else's) float out of the drain. The showers hot water barely worked. The air con was extremely old, loud and struggled. The hotel is noisy too, you can hear everything people are doing in the above, adjacent rooms and hallway. Wifi costs $15brl per 24 hrs and barely works, 90% of the time it is extremely slow, even when i moved to sit in the lobby it was almost slower if that is possible. One morning we got a phone call at 5am from someone speaking Portuguese (I guess), until they hung up because I couldn't understand them, I hadn't asked for awake up call and don't know who would ring our room besides reception, and reception had no reason too. We also got them to book a taxi (the night before) for 5am to go to galeao airport, we waited until 5:15am and the taxi hadn't turned up, after asking reception to check to see if its coming, they said yeah it should be. we had a plane to catch which didnt seem to matter to them.finally the bellboy wondered out onto to streets to get a taxi for us. We got to the airport and raced through check in and security to just make it on the plane. so all in all avoid this place at all costs. We wasted 6 nights of our life we can never get back.

Friendly staff at reception, STILL THEY CHARGE 15 REALES FOR A CRAPPY INTERNET SERVICE WHICH DOESN'T WORK AT ALL, AND WHICH UPON COMPLAINT, THE MANAGEMENT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING TO SOLVE. IT'S INCREDIBLE RIO WANTS TO HOST THE OLYMPICS WITH THIS KIND OF SERVICES WHICH ARE NOT UP TO THE STANDARDS OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND LEISURE TRAVELERS.
It's the second time i come (was here last january) and they still haven't solved this!
the building has great artdeco architecture, built in the 30s-40s, refurbished in the 70s, which fortunately (or unfortunately) hasn't been refurbished yet (with which they will probably spoil any remaining character. A no frills hotel, in great location in beautiful palm lined Paysandou street and next to Flamengo Park, great for jogging and morning swim. Some rooms better than others, not enough towels in bathroom, breakfast is ok, lots of fruit and juices.

Room Tip: facade rooms are nicer have more light and view, but might be noisier

The building is really old, and it needs maintenance and redecoration. Sheets and towels are clean, though. Breakfast is very simple. At around 7 in the morning we started listening to people moving furniture upstairs; we called reception to complain but it went on the whole morning. Next morning, same thing. Something very very serious was that my nephew put the "do not disturb" sign and still they entered the room. Not nice at all. Elevator is too small and you have to wait a lot to get in it, since it´s always crowded (with 4 people). Would stay there again if I couldn´t find anywhere else.

We stayed with my husband at Augusto’s Paysandu Hotel for 6 nights in July 2012. I wouldn’t go there again.

The area is a bit boring, not much to do or see. Couple of restaurants and cafes, supermarket and a park. We left in the morning and returned in the evening. The area did feel very safe, though.

Breakfast was nice with couple of different fresh fruits, several juices, bread, ham, cheese, jam, cereal, milk, coffee and tea.

The room was badly outdated and quite ugly. Sheets and blankets were dirty and had something blood like in them (see the picture). The bathroom was really ascetic. The weird thing about it was the fact that it had a small window - to another bathroom! (See the picture.) It’s so high you can’t peek, but you do hear the voices. I guess that’s great for one kind of fetishists but I wasn’t exactly pleased to hear our neighbors going to the toilet. Let alone to be heard.

On the web page the hotel tells every room has wireless internet. What it doesn’t say is that the internet is super slow and crappy and costs 15 reals per day. Actually it felt like they were trying to charge extra in any possible way. For example, there was a safety deposit box in the room but there was no lock on it: the lock cost 3 reals per day. I know it isn’t much but that’s just stupid. Add it to the price of the room like everywhere else.

The staff was polite and many of them spoke English. They apologized and seemed to be really ashamed of the stupid hotel policies like having to pay for the lock.

For my next visit to lovely Rio I’ll pick another hotel and another area.

Paysandu is possibly the worst hotel I've ever been to.

I had a reservation for 2 nights. The first room we were given was unattractive, but at least had a good deal of natural light. However, it smelled like it had just been vacated by...how do I put this?...an old prostitute. Unbelievable, unbearable stench of cigarettes and nasty, cheap perfume. There was no way anyone could have tolerated it. We returned to the front desk, explained the problem and were issued a new room, albeit very reluctantly, by the front desk clerk, who clearly thought we were being unreasonable.

The second room was the size of a closet. It barely contained the hard, discolored old bed. There was one small window in the room, next to the bed. It looked out onto a damp, filthy air shaft. No, I don't travel to stay in my room and am pretty tolerant of budget accommodations, but this was downright depressing.

We stayed our obligatory 2 nights, then got out of there. There are many other nicer options in the neighborhood for roughly the same price or just a little bit more. We wound up at the Rondonia, which was paradise in comparison. I strongly advise avoiding the Paysandu Hotel.
