My partner and I stayed at this hotel during the recent Confederations Cup in Brazil. As you can imagine, finding accommodation around this time was quite difficult (and overpriced). Unfortunately, our stay here did not begin in the way we had imagined. Our flights had been delayed so by the time we arrived at 7pm we were both tired and hungry so my boyfriend asked concierge where would be good to eat. He directed us to go to the end of the street and turn left, so we did and we were mugged at knife point by a local who stole our phones and money. This can happen anywhere, so while we do not blame the hotel staff, their reaction to this was very disappointing. I was quite distressed when we arrived back to the hotel and rather than calling the police to come to the hotel, they sent their doorman to take us back out onto the streets and to the police station. He seemed to be the only one with any real concern for us and our safety. After a few hours we returned to the hotel and not one person asked if we were okay or offered any assistance. We had not eaten and when we asked about room service they said it had closed for the night and told us to go back out onto the streets to buy food (we obviously had no cash). We needed to cancel our phone services and when we asked about making calls home we were told we had to do them from our room.
The next day my boyfriend asked for the safe lock, in which he was told it would cost 6R a day. Sensitive right?
We tried to let this slide but when our rooms had not been cleaned in 3 nights (so no clean towels, bins full of water bottles, beds not made) we decided to ask why, especially since we had been leaving the door sign up requesting the room be cleaned. When my boyfriend spoke to the staff the gentleman at the front desk shrugged his shoulders and said 'We're full.' I was shocked. This hotel claims to be 4 stars. Obviously being at full capacity is rare for this place because they were not equipped to meet the demands of their guests.
By this stage we had had enough. When we complained to the manager he was shaking his head in disbelief. He waived the international call fees to cancel our phones (two short phone calls worked out to be over $300AU) and immediately sent someone to clean our rooms. I want to stress that the doormen were professional and friendly and always went out of their way to help us. Unfortunately, this is not enough to save this hotel. Claiming to be 4 stars is a real stretch. The décor is dated and rather than bringing character to the building, just looks corny. The air conditioning units were installed before I was born, the bed sheets do not fit the beds and the TVs were so old, I am surprised the screen appeared in colour.
If you’re staying here for the 2014 World Cup and have already paid $500+ a night, do yourself a favour and cancel it if you can. You won’t regret it!
