The hotel itself is ok, good enough to sleep/shower, since nobody on holidays want to stay in a hotel room. The breakfast is decent, and the staff is polite and helpful.

The thing is Copacabana, especially the avenue this hotel is located, is awful. It's a tourist trap. Although you see police around, when it comes to the crunch they can't do anything to protect you. Even though my husband and I were really careful, we had our camera stollen at knife point almost in front of a police patrol car.

If you really need to go to Rio (I really don't see the reason why) try to stay away from Copacabana. Try Ipanema, it's more expensive, but much much better neighbourhood.

My recommnedation overall: skip Rio, go to Paraty instead.

Definitely below standards. Website is very misleading re facilities eg the health centre very small with only 2 machines and a pond for a swimming pool, noisy ,red light district etc. Our stay was definitely not very enjoyable. I would recommend that travellers used to good hotels rather book at Ipanema, better locatiom with a better beach. Definitely shop around and make enquiries as websites tend to be very misleading.
Very disappointed otherwise Brazil itself great fun except that very few people speak English

The hotel was booked through our travel agency. This was the only hotel avail during the time period we were in Rio.
If you travel frequently and are used to great hotels pass on this one ...
Rooms are noisy . We experienced (out of control) guests in the room next to us having loud gatherings around 12:00 am. You can hear the elevator going up and down. Airconditioning didn't work. No bath tube just a shower. The carpet in the hallways are worn out and need to get replaced.Breakfast Okay . Staff appears to be disinterested and incompetent. The location is not great.Hotel is located in the middle of the red light district. My girflfriend was robbed not to far from the hotel. We felt unsafe ( and we are from South Africa ) If you plan to go to Rio . I would suggest to pass on Copanbana and go directly to Impenema and willing to spend more for better accomodation . Rio is great with New years !

“Don't be afraid of Rio!”

Best Western Rio Copa

Dec 10, 2006

My wife and I stayed here for two nights post cruise from Europe. The hotel is well-located, close to Copacabana beach and on several bus routes to get you around this very lively city. We had been warned about the pickpockets etc., in Rio but that has been taken care of by the creation of Tourist Police who are everywhere. They are both men and women and are armed so the bad guys don't mess with them or the tourists. Rio will host the Pan-American Games next year so they had to do something about the crime I guess. The accommodation is very much like a European hotel, but the room we had on the 10th floor and facing the road was quite large and had a sitting area attached. Breakfast was plentiful and the variety was excellent, top marks. The staff all speak and understand English very well and greet you with a smile at all times. I'd love to return to this city, it's fun!

“Good budget option”

Best Western Rio Copa

Oct 10, 2006

We stayed here for three nights. Location is good - very easy access to Copacabana beach. Meridian is a good landmark.
Rooms are comfortable and well equipped and ours was a good size. Reception quite good, but the star of the show is the guy on the door. Like having your dad look after you - not just getting the taxi, but making sure the meter is on, and telling you very loudly how much it should cost, just in case the taxi driver has other ideas!
Breakfast good, but the restaurant is a bit soul-less so we didn't feel inclined to try the buffet dinner or lunch. The 'bar' is in the restaurant - no atmosphere at all. Pool and gym are tiny. Nothing special but a good choice for a safe, clean, comfortable budget location close to beach.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — the doorman excelled in customer care
    • Disliked — taxi to beach locations has to go north via tunnel - not good if traffic is busy
    • Tips/Secrets: — marius seafood buffet - expensive but what a great foodie experience.
