“Rio a very nice place to visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2010

A very nice hotel located at the south end of Copacabana Beach with a fantastic view of the beach and Sugarloaf Mountain in the distance. We paid extra to have a beach view and felt it was worth the extra money. The rooms are modern and roomy complete with fridge, air conditioning and safe. The staff were helpful and spoke English. They wanted to book tours for us, but were reluctant to give us information so we could travel on our own (which is how we prefer to travel). The location is within walking distance of shops, restaurants and Ipanema Beach. The bank and bus stop is 2 blocks from the hotel. There is a fantastic view of the beach from the roof top pool. The south end of the beach is smaller than any other part of Copapcabana. Good breakfast and nicely served coffee.

Very clean, modern and well stafed hotel on Rio's Cococabana Beach. The Hotel rooms have window into centre rather than overlook beach which is a shame. However, there is a fantastic roof swimming pool with adjacent bar with fanatstic views over Beach nd city.If you have breakfast included then you have a great deal the food is very well cooked and nutricious and more than ample supplies of fresh fruit and cereals as well as pastries. Most staff speak English and are very friendly and obliging.
Cococabana Beach is over the road, and Ipanema Beach only 400 meters away. Some good restaurants within 100 meters -- warning don't go further at night as very risky. Reviewers wife robbed in daylight only 300 meters from hotel. Several excellent restaurants within a 100 meters of hotel and are great at night. Very reasonably priced with good food and drink.

The Orla Copacabana is in a fantastic location, with panoramic views from the far end of Copacabana Beach. The rooms were fine, with a comfortable bed, decent bathroom and shower, and working air conditioning.

My only two issues with the hotel were the elevators and the size of the breakfast room. It didn't seem to matter what time of the day you wanted to use the elevators, there was a significant wait. (I tested this before 6am and waited between 5 and 10 mIinutes!) I couldn't figure out what was the problem, as it didn't seem to depend on the number of people using the elevator at that time. I soon learned to leave my room 15 minutes before I wanted to be in the lobby.

The breakfasts were good, although as one reviewer noted, the same every day. My issue was with the size of the breakfast room. Although they squeezed in every possible table, making it difficult to move around in the room, there was still typically at least a 10 minute wait for breakfast at all times. Some guests just gave up and skipped breakfast.

Despite these two issues, I'd recommend the Orla Copacabana. It is a reasonbaly priced, mid-range hotel in an excellant location.

We stayed in the Hotel for a week during March 2010. Being close to the border between Ipanema and Copacabana makes the location excellent. The rooms were neat. The breakfast was very nice, although it is exactly the same food every day. The staff could speak English and we found them very helpful. The internet reception in our room was poor and they moved us to another roomwith good reception the very same day I complained. One thing we missed was that there was no kettle with tea or coffee in the rooms. We will definitely make use of this hotel again.

We stayed here for 4 nights in March/10. Upon arrival we were told that the room we had reserved would not be available until the following night. We were put into a small room at the rear...I went out to run an errand and by the time I got back my wife said that the front desk had called and they were going to move us to the Master Suite at no extra charge. Needless to say our attitude improved immediately. The staff were extremely helpful and spoke good English. The breakfast was excellent. There is not a lot of wasted space in this hotel. I think Rio is quite expensive but found the Orla to be good value particular when you consider you are beachfront. We always felt safe in and around the area, close to Ipanema so the location was very good. We had a late flight and were able to get a late checkout which was very convenient as well.Wi-Fi connection was excellent...no charge. They did charge $4/day for use of in suite safe which I think is a bit cheeky and once was charged $5 for a bucket of ice...the other times I was told there was no charge and the waiter even refused a tip. I would stay there again. RB, Vancouver,BC

This hotel is located right on the border of Copacabana and Ipanema, so the location is pretty good. I did not feel unsafe at all (but tried not to walk around after dark too much, especially if no one was around). In general the hotel was clean and relativley nice for the price, although the shower could have been a little nicer. We had a "delux" room, which had no view, but was a good size for two people. My biggest complaint about this place was the staff, as they were not very friendly at all. In addition, whenever we asked for advice on where to go or eat, they would only recommend places they would get a cut from. They recommended the Plataforma dinner and tour. I highly recommend you DO NOT take this. The resturaunt was really bad, worse than even the crappiest churascuria I've been to in the states (and the tour was expensive). The show was just OK, but bad for the price. I would recommend just researching and finding better resturaunts and shows to go to on your own. Don't rely on this hotel for advice. The view from the top was the best part of the hotel. They charge $4R a day for the safe, which isnt that bad.

As for Rio, Ipanema and leblon are defeniltey nicer beaches compared to copa, but copa has cheaper drinks and stuff for sale on the beach. Christ the redemer and sugar loaf shouldnt be missed, but beware at sugar loaf, they wont take credit card unless you have ID on you!

I had a good luck ordering a double deluxe room with a seaview, so the view from the room was breathtaking (it would have been spectacular, if one could open the windows in any other way than from below). The whole of the beach is right in front of you, with the historical fort within 100 m, two-three blocks to Ipanema and a fantastic view of the Sugar Loaf. The other rooms were claustrophobically small - so splash out (the nearby Sofitel has balconies where one can sit and enjoy the views).
Bathrooms are small and entrance into the shower stall is somewhat limited. Anybody with the waistline more than 38" should think twice about squeezing themselves into the narrow opening between the glass sliding doors.
Breakfast is copious and satisfying, especially since it is free : ) The pool on the top of the hotel is VERY small, but serves as a good viewing platform for those who stay in rooms with no view whatsoever. Deposit safes are R4 per day, keep that in mind. IF you decide to leave luggage downstairs keep in mind that it may spill onto the vestibule area where everyone has free access to it. Lock it securely
Nearby restaurants are open 24/7, portions are gargantuan, prices are ok. So is food.
