“Great hotel in downtown Rio”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012

I stayed at this hotel for a week August 19-26, 2012. The rooms were clean. It is a little better part of downtown. Since it is on the main street in downtown it was a little better in the evening. The busses run right past the hotel and the subway is a short walk from the hotel. The breakfast was very good with a good selection. I was happy to be staying away from the tourist area and there are plenty of sights to see in downtown Rio (The theater, national library, and cafeteria colombo to name a few) If you are here for only the beach, then you may want to stay closer to the beach even though it's about a 10 minute metro ride. However if you like to take in the culture too and see some great architecture, then Windsor Guanabara Hotel is a great find.

Room Tip: The higher rooms hava a better view. The view from the pool is very good too!

First, this hotel is in the center of Rio de Janeiro so it does not compare with the touristic areas like Copacabana or Ipanema. Stay here if you have a reason to be in this area. The hotel offers little frills - rooms have all the necessary but no more; but I suspect that standards in this area may be lower than in the south zone. In most place of the world this would be a three star hotel.
Extreme traffic noise in front rooms even as early as 5am. In spite of being on the 22nd floor, the noise was quite disturbing.
The restaurant is acceptable but not particularly nice.
The hotel is huge and gets crowded with groups.

Hotel Guanabara

Title: Where else are you going to stay?

So if you must stay in Downtown Rio, which I needed to do, where else are you going to stay? There aren't many good alternatives, and most major chains are over at the Copacabana.

The Hotel Guanabara is a no-frills 3 star hotel. It provides for your basic needs, but if you need anything beyond that, you need to look elsewhere. For example, your room lacks an alarm clock, wireless internet (they have wired), a deadbolt, etc. You are given exactly two large towels and two small towels. If you need something else, you won't find it. Or if you go to the gym… do you think there is a water cooler in there? Nope. Maybe a rack of towels? Nope. You need to bring one of your four allocated towels. I forgot my toothpaste. I went downstairs to ask the front desk if they had some toothpaste for me, and they looked at me like I was crazy.

The room itself looks more like a convent than a hotel room. The mattress is quite hard, and the bedding is meager, at best. Now that being said, it was quite clean at least. The cleanliness is what's keeping the star rating at three. I did feel like everywhere I went in the hotel, it was clean.

The pool is quite small, and it didn't look very relaxing, but the view from the rooftop pool is actually pretty nice. The gym up there has a couple treadmills and a few random machines. If you want to burn some calories off before you go to meetings in the morning, then it's functional, but if you're planning on getting any other type of workout done, look elsewhere.

I think three stars is fair for the hotel. Your'e getting a place to sleep in Downtown Rio, and it will be clean. You get no creature comforts beyond that. I was there for just one night. If I had to stay a few nights in Rio, I would just stay at Copacabana and deal with the traffic to my meetings. If I had to do another single night downtown, I'd stay at the Hotel Guanabara again.

Strange yellow upholstery, unfriendly front desk, and poorly trained bell staff. This prime location hotel does not do justice to either its price or potential. There is very little to recommend, though you could very easily also get by. Just don't expect the front desk to be helpful or be sensitive. Especially to foreigners who will find communication more difficult than in the rest of the city.

Room Tip: Just step out for a snack / meal on the sidewalk outside instead of the depressing dining room. It w...

Good location in town.. good range of breakfast offerings and staff who were helpful though limited in english...

At times not very efficient and customer focussed... but always lots of them...

Price.. omg.. not good value for money but i guess that's what goes in Rio...

Room was neat and tidy if somewhat 70's... small .. for what i expected...

Room Tip: Make sure you are not close to the lift.. else you'll be counting the trips to get to sleep...

Average hotel with some good aspects (but didn't merit 'very good' grade and Trip Advisor doesn't allow a 'good' assessment). Handy for business in the middle of Rio. Metro station near by. Very quiet area as far as shops, restaurants, bars during the week end. Good size rooms are ok - typically Rio. Mini-bar but no coffee/tea facilities. No iron - not found a hotel in Rio that does provide iron yet. Small pool and gym (4 or 5 running machines, 1x-trainer and some multi-gym stuff). No bar in the lobby and 'bar' on the roof was very disappointing - lots of standard table and chairs set out like a restaurant and a. Waiter who took your order for drinks - basic only. Tins of beer etc. Space could be used so much better. Friendly staff. Cable Internet in rooms only and new wireless on roof and in lobby & restaurant. Not cheap R$25 + taxes per 24hr. Taxi to Copacaban about R$20 and R$35 to Ipanema.

Downtown, attracting business people, but tourists are also there. Fairly good breakfast. Pretty expensive especially if compared with Asia. Surprise surprise: NO WI-FI!!!
