“All good except for one major problem...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2009

This is actually a very nice hotel, it's clean and nicely presented, the breakfast buffet was good (comparitive to what you get in South America), there's a nice rooftop bur and patio, so we were very happy until it came time to lie down on the bed.
The airconditioning unit is place directly next to the pillow! so the air rushes directly into your face at an enormous rate (you aren't able to adjust the temp or the speed!!) making sleep impossible.
We ended up having to build a barrier with our bags just to get some relief from it but even then the noise continued to keep us awake.
We only stayed here for one night, and I couldn't recommend it which is a shame because the rest of it is pretty good, but you have to be able to sleep!

We only stayed in the hotel Florida for two nights between flightsin/out of Rio - we had prebooked the hotel before our trip as it looked fairly central and also near to the airport.

It is a big, fairly anonymous hotel - perfectly clean and well run but a little lacking on the personality front - combine this with its inauspicious location in th rather un-exciting Flamengo area and we did feel a little like the holiday had abruptly ended and we were actually away on business!!

However, the buffet at breakfast was substantial, all services were provided very professionally, our taxi to the airport arrived super-promptly and there was even a pool which we didn't go in because we didn't have time but which looked fine if more of a mini-pool than a pool.

The staff were pleasant and I would recommend the Florida for anyone on business (!!) or if you are staying for a short time in rio and are looking for somewhere inbetween the historical centre and Lapa (for going out) and the beaches - NB Flamengo beach is very nearby, but it isnt the nicest beach and its definitely worth making the extra journey to Copacobana or Ipanema.

  • Liked — The efficiency of the service and the cleanliness
  • Disliked — The lack of atmosphere

We stayed at the hotel florida over NYE 2007/2008 and we loved it. Big room and bathroom, everything in mint conditions. Staff very friendly and helpful. Very good breakfast (plenty of fresh fruit, eggs and bacon, toasts, juices etc.). Top floor swimming pool is pretty small but cool to relax after sightseeing.
Only problem is the location: though it's very close to the Catete metro station, it's a bit far away from Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. If u plan on going to the beach every day, choose a closer hotel.
Would definitely come back.

I was moved to Florida after staying in the Othon Palace.
Both were about the same price but the quality of food in the Florida was so much better. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The Florida has not the sea front views of the other but more than makes up in other ways. It is conveniently situated in a nice area very close to the Flamenco beach park (few minutes walk) and the city centre/main beaches can be reached in a few stations using the subway. The staff were very helpful and the rooms nice and clean.
I would choose to stay there on another trip.

We stayed at the Florida Hotel in Rio for three nights. It is located a block from Flamengo beach, and a block from the Presidential Palace museum.

The rooms were clean, spacious and well-kept. Our travel agent had arranged for us to stay in a superior room at the same price as a standard room, but when we checked in we were shown a standard room. They switched us to a superior room without any problems, and we were glad to have the extra space. Neither room had a view, however.

The breakfast included was the best we had during our stay in Brazil -- delicious and lots of options. All the hotel staff were very helpful and courteous. There is a lovely pool on the top floor.

This hotel was recommended to us by the travel agent and also Frommers. I would definitely recommend this hotel for someone who wants to stay in that part of Rio.

We stayed in the Florida in September 2005, having come down from Manaus. This was an intermediate stop before we finished our holiday in the Copacabana Palace, so we wanted somewhere cheap. we were very pleasantly surprised by the Florida, which offered a central location, pleasant staff, an interesting and attractive interior and a decent breakfast. The doormen were very helpful with getting our hefty luggage into ta taxi, even though it was clear we were moving on to the Copacabana Palace rather than to the airport!

The Florida is quite a distance from Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, but it is right next to a Metro stop which will take you to the city centre and southern Copacabana, and it is right next to the Catete Palace (which has pleasant grounds, and is historically interesting, having been the former presidential palace of Getulio Vargas). There are several good restaurants not too far from the Florida, including Cafe Lamas (Rua Marques de Abrantes 18-A), which has been serving food since 1874 (though not in its present location).
