“There are better places...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013 via mobile

We were initially put in a very dark corner room. I found a live, crawling cockroach. So I frantically asked to be moved to a different room. The rooms I had seemed smoking since there were ashtrays in the rooms. The staff kept on saying it is non-smoking. But the sheets smelled of smoke.
Breakfast was good. I really love pan de quiejo. There was a good selection of bread.
There is a street market that opens from 7pm until 1am Tues-thu so hold off your souvenir shopping until you checked this out. It is really cheap there. But be warned: all the shirts I bought there shrunk big time.
There are a lot of travel companies around the corner. Check them out before booking any tour with the concierge. Hotel's quote is more expensive.

Dear Guest,

On behalf of the Lancaster Othon Travel, we would like to thank you for the comments regarding the praises of our "pão de queijo" and breakfast in general.
We regret the fact that you found a crawling cockroach, as we take care about this and every fifteen days we received an outsourced company that worked in each three floors of the Hotel. If you would like please send me your email and I send back the certificate of this company confirming the date that they went in the room that you stayed in the Hotel.
Regarding the tours, the Reception quote more than others companies, as we knew all the tours and the agencies, and we recommend them. Fortunately we don´t have any complain about this matter.
We hope we can welcome you again in Rio and I ´ll be here to receive you.

Best Regards,
Vera Reis

The location is great. In front of Copacaba Beach and near the metro.
The manager Vera is very helpful.The clerk Daniel is a showman.
Ask for a refurbished room, facing the sea, since the building is old.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room, facing the sea.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

I stayed at the Othon for 4 nights from July 6-10, 2013 and it was my first time in Rio. The room was huge and had a very comfortable king sized bed, large couch, and 2 large chairs. I was on the 10th floor with a big balcony facing the beach. The bathroom was a good size and as a bonus I could see Christ the Redeemer from the window.
The entire staff was extremely helpful and assisted me during my stay in Rio. Breakfast was a solid mix of breads, eggs, meats and fruits. I suggest getting to breakfast early as the seating area can fill up fast on busy days. The one hotel staff member that stood out was Daniel for all his great food recommendations. Whatever type of food I was hungry for he pointed me in the right direction every time.
I would've given Othon an excellent (5) rating but there were some issues with the elevators. One day it almost caused me to miss one of my tours but the staff at the hotel did everything to find me and make sure the tour didn't leave without me.
Overall it was a really nice stay in Rio at the Othon hotel and I would definitely stay there again. Hopefully on my return visit for the Olympics in 2016!

No doubt that this hotel has an excellent location for tourists. You only have to cross the Atlantica Avenue to be in the middle of Copacabana Beach. However, when you need a last minute lodging in Rio when you are on a business trip, I do not recommend it at all.
It does not have parking lot - you can try and find a spot at Atlantica Avenue, if you are Lucky - and there is only free wifi internet access at the lobby.
Our sales assistant booked two rooms and informed us a rate and the corresponding booking number. The person at the reception found our booking but the rate and the city taxes charged were different from what we have been told, and it was pointless arguing about that.
I cannot say a word about the view, because I was given a room on the back of the hotel, and as someone had left the window open, the rooms was smelling like the snack bars behind the hotel on a side street. It was not pleasant at all.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the front of the hotel, so you can really have a breathtaking view of Copacaba...

Prezado Sr. Otavio,
Agradeço por ter efetuado o registro sobre sua hospedagem no site do Trip Advisor com elogios a nossa localização.
Com relação aos comentários, ressalto que:
- estacionamento: são poucos Hotéis da orla de Copacabana que têm estacionamento, pois foram construidos na decada de 50 e mesmo os mais modernos não dispõem de estacionamento;
- internet: está a disposição gratuitamente no lobby do Hotel e é cobrada no apartamento; o acesso existe e provavelmente durante a sua estada a velocidade deveria estar bem lenta, pelo qual peço desculpas;
- a confirmação da sua reserva foi enviada via email para a pessoa que efetuou a mesma, no dia 05 jun as 16h37 e havia a informação sobre o valor da diária e 15% de taxas, sendo 10% (taxa de serviço) e 5 % de ISS;
- o apartamento que lhe foi entregue estava dentro da categoria que foi reservada, no caso a STD (fundos) e temos também a categoria LUXO (frente mar com varanda);

Atenciosamente,
Vera Reis

The Lancaster Hotel was my first hotel in Brazil over 25 years ago, and I return again and again. In all that time, I have found the staff to be polite, courteous, professional and friendly. The Lancaster has a great location, fantastic views from very large balconies. The room are spacious and clean. The staff in the breakfast lounge are the best in any hotel I've ever been. If you take the time to speak to the hotel manager, she will go out of her way to resolve any issues or problems.

I can't say enough about the staff, they are the best and that is why I will return whenever I can.

Room Tip: Book an oceanfront room for a great view of Copacabana.

In March 2013, we 3, couples stayed at this hotel for 4 nights at the end of our 18 day South America tour. Hotel looks ordinary from entrance but when we went to our 10th floor room, and when entered the balcony, we were awe struk. The view of the Copacabana beach was fantastic.The front desk staff was very helpful and welcoming. We were especially very impressed by Daniel at the desk and another Daniel ar breakfast. The rooms were fairly large size, clean and comfortable. Tho location is right in the middle of Copacabana Beach hotels. The We were very impressed with how the city has devloped the beach area. In the US , the beachfront is normally sold to highrise hotels or apartments and public can enter the beach from only some access points. In Rio the beach is totally open to the public , Then there is a very wide walkway, next are bicycle and joggers lanes.Then comes 6 lane road with large median. Next comes full car park lane and then a footpath. The high rises start after all this, which makes beach front lively 24 hours. The high rises still get their great view, but common public is not deprived of the beach like in the US.

Room Tip: Remember to get room with balcony, as not all rooms have that.

Spent 3 days there recently.The hotel is located on the beach with good view and offers easy access to many public transportation,which,unfornately, are the only 2 selling points.Otherwise, everything else is worn and cheap--the air conditioner might be a 30 years old junk roaring all night without producing much cool air;the toilet has to be flushed couple of times at least for a complete cycle;the beddings and TV might have been used by my grandpa...
The conclusion is as the tittle suggests.
