I had been to lunch at the Copacabana Palace's beachview restaurant on a past trip to Rio and was so enchanted I promised I would take my partner there if I could persuade her to visit Rio - and I finally did, for a three-night stay.
We had an ocean-view room in the new building overlooking the pool; we thought the decor exquisite, the suite spacious with excellent luggage and clothes storage and the bathroom understated but luxurious.
We found the front desk "Latino efficient," friendly and helpful and the concierge desk outstanding. Their suggestions for shopping, dining and adventure (don't miss the helicopter ride around the Corcovado at dusk!) were most helpful and the hotel cars were cheaps and always available - far better option than taxis, which can be difficult to get in Rio. The formal Italian restaurant is worth a visit but we enjoyed the excellent breakfasts at the beachfront/pool restaurant and drinks there by the pool were a treat.
This is a world-famous hotel that lives up to its reputation - we would place it alongside the Villa d'Este at Lake Como, Raffles in Singapore or the Peninsular in Hong Kong as a classic "old colonial" experience. We like trying different places but this is one we will return to.
