“Good quality at great value for Rio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2009

A very good hotel. I picked it due to the reviews on here and the fact it was considerably cheaper than the likes of Sofitel and JW Marriott. For the views of Copacabana, the location is fantastic.

Plus points: Good breakfast buffet (which was included, unlike the others). My room was nicely fitted out and modern with a good bed and decent shower and a balcony overlooking the beach. The staff were very friendly and helpful and I was given a glass of chilled, sparkling wine on arrival which was greatly appreciated.

Minus points: Only small things really. The pool on the roof is literally only a few metres long so don't plan on doing much swimming - more than 2 people in it is a squeeze. Not much in the way of a bar - one on the roof which is obviously closed if the weather is bad and a very small thing off the lobby. Wi-Fi Internet access at around £15 a day is expensive and something I am beginning to expect to get for free these days.

Also, it's not really in an area you want to be wandering around in after dark. I didn't see much in the way of bars (but I didn't really have much chance to look) and general advice seems to be to be v. careful around Copacabana at night.

These small things aside, its a very nice hotel at a very good price. Recommend it.

This is a fine, modern, clean hotel overlooking Copacabana Beach. The lobby area is stylish and rooms comfortable, rather than large, and well decorated in a minimalist if slightly bland style. The bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean and the linen changed regularly. The breakfast was excellent with a large choice of fruit, cereals and cold and cooked meats, served in a dining room that has sweeping views over Copacabana Bay. The views from our room were restricted, with only a slight view of the beach. If you can afford to it would make sense to book a room or suite at the front of the hotel as they are larger and have superb views. The hotel is well situated with many bars and restaurants nearby, the metro stop is only a few minutes walk away and we encountered no security problems walking in the area both during the day and at night. Having said that Copacabana is somewhat run down compared to Ipanema or Leme and if I return to Rio I would prefer Ipanema. Using the telephones for international calls is, as is normal in such hotels, extremely expensive and you should use the locatorio around the corner for a fraction of the price.

We spent two weeks in this excellent hotel. Highlights of our stay were the friendliness of the staff, the variety of items offered with the breakfast buffet, the comfort and cleanliness of the room and, of course, the privileged location just in front of the Copacabana beach. The weekend, after our working week, we could enjoy the free use of chairs and umbrellas in the beach just across from the hotel.
The day of our departure we had a late flight from Rio's international airport. The hotel management was kind enough to let us remain past the checkout time in our room so that we could enjoy a last beach day and a shower before leaving the hotel. In fact they were even more accommodating than that: our luxe room was already reserved for other guests so they lent us an unoccupied room elsewhere in the hotel. We really appreciated this gesture!
Our only criticism is that a hotel in this price range does not offer free wireless: they charge a rate which is at least ten times more expensive than what our French ISP charges us (and our ISP service includes telephone and TV!).

A fantastic city and a great hotel. Spent 7 comfortable nights here in a superior room. My one slight comment regards the room - their superior room is not to the same standard as say a Vegas room, comfortable but not what you may expect from a "Superior" room. One piece of advice - try and get a suite - great view of the Copacabana beach from the front of the hotel, although all rooms do have a balcony and view. The room was small for the three of us, so see comment above. As our party consisted of seven people in three rooms, we had hoped we may get an upgrade, but this was offered at £60 per night! Make sure you do check which room you have booked to avoid slight disappointment. You do get a free safe deposit box - make sure you return the key and lock at check out or you may get charged (about £9 for 7 days).
Small pool on the roof (I suggest you just jump straight in!!). There is a suana and massage facilities on the top floor - reasonable prices.
The staff are very attentive and speak excellent English. We were well looked after by the receptionists and the bell hops, Alexandre and the other gentleman on reception as well as Mauro a bell-hop were some of the best, but all of them were friendly and supportive during our stay. Leiza was a fantastic host on the rooftop bar, friendly, chatty and very customer focussed, full of information. There was a lovely pregnant lady who welcomed us to Breakfast, but unfortunately cannot remember her name. She taught us some portuguese, excellent. Indeed most of the people we met were friendly, really dispelling any of the negative comments you hear about Rio - during our stay we never felt threatened.
Breakfast at the hotel was excellent, although we did not eat in the hotel for lunch or dinner. There are some good restaurants close by - MABs (turn left out of the hotel) a five minute walk was good value. Also left was a churrascaria (looks like I spelt that right!!) is a meat eaters paradise. It is a flat rate and they bring the meat to your table on skewers and slice the meat direct to your plate - THIS IS NOT a place for a vegetarian or those who do not want to pig out on red meat. There was also a good Italian just past the Copacabana Palace Hotel.
As a friend said to me prior to the trip, if you are going to the Corcovada make sure you go early, it gets very busy!! Sugar loaf is a fantastic experience and in our opinion offers the best views of the city. Take a helicopter flight from Sugar Loaf around the corcovada - excellent!! And of course for all the boys - the Maracana. We were lucky a match was on during our trip - fantastic spectacle. One word - it is not in the best area of Rio - take an organised tour - the hotel offer such trips. It is the safest way to see a fantastic sporting arena.
Another organised trip is to a typical Brazilian show, the Plataforma, with ladies wearing little more than feathers, brilliant acrobats and Samba music . This is another churrascaria place, food good and the show very good. One word of warning, the waiters bring you drinks throughout and only towards the end of the show do they come and collect the bill - I think some there thought the drinks were free and part of the show.
For girls, the road which runs parallel with Avenue Atlantica had more shoe shops than I have ever seen in one place (Stupid husband/boyfriend who will buy you no end of shoes is optional, but recommended!!!)

We spent the first few nights of our honeymoon in Porto Bay and the room was fantastic! It was a semicircle with a perfect view on Copacabana Beach - floor to ceiling windows, cool IPOD station, all white with white orchids and a marble bathroom. The concierge can work miracles and the location was sublime. The breakfast buffet was impressive and overall, we loved the romantic, trendy and sleek hotel in Rio.

We loved the Porto Bay Rio Internacional and would recommend it to anyone. The rooms were attractive, spacious and clean and the staff went out of their way to be helpful. They also spoke english quite well. The location was right across the street from the Copacabana beach and the hotel offers free towels, chairs and umbrellas. They even provide complimentary flip-flops in the room. The shower pressure was incredible- better than my one at home. The staff had plenty of helpful suggestions and let us have free late check out so we could take full advantage of the beach. It was also reasonably priced although I believe July is off season. We even had a side view of the beach from the balcony off our room. The pool was small but the view was great.

We stayed for four nights in Nov 08. It's a very nice, new hotel. The rooms were clean and of a good standard. A touch small but had a nice little balcony and everything we needed. And based on the location, to be expected. The breakfast was very nice and the service was good. The location is right on copacobana beach and very easy to catch buses from there to the sights, like sugar loaf mountain. They have a driver service which came in handy on one occassion.
