“Great hotel on Copacabana”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

My girlfriend and I spend 5 nights in Rio in early September and cannot say enough good things about the JW Marriott Rio. The staff was amazing, extremely, friendly and even a touch of humor. The recommendations for restaurants nearby were great, the were good at giving us guidance for safety in walking at night, and the beach in front of the hotel has a small section for Marriott guests with some nicer chairs. As a Marriott rewards Gold, the lounge use was fantastic, great breakfast, free drinks/snacks at night, and very helpful staff during the check in/check out process as well as during the day. I plan to make this my go to hotel in Rio.

We stayed four nights at the JW and had a great experience. Check-in on the concierge level was easy and quick. The entire hotel staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. Complimentary breakfast on the concierge level was very good, and fairly typical for a Marriott. We tried out the restaurant one day for lunch and it was delicious. We asked how a certain Brazilian bar drink was made and the staff invited us to come behind the bar and taught us how to make the drink. The location of the hotel is ideal, about in the middle of Copacabana Beach, making it an excellent location for walks or short taxi rides to Ipanema Beach and many restaurants and shopping. The hotel pool is on the top floor of the hotel, affording terrific views of Rio. The hotel has a group of attended, free lounge chairs and umbrellas on the beach, which is across the street. Our room, a small suite, was very comfortable and quiet. It faced the atrium, with no exterior view, but it was brightly lit and did not seem too enclosed. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We traveled as a family of three. The mini suite was just perfect, with master bedroom and bath, plu...

The staff make a hotel experience often and the staff at this hotel were great. I had stayed here a number of years ago but it has improved and the experience was a good one.

I got an atrium room which was the only downside of the experience. I was offered an upgrade to a beach view room but did not think it was worth it for me as I was not planning on spending much time there. I am sure they are spectacular. The view from the rooftop pool area is amazing.

The bed was comfortable and the room, although somewhat spartan, was clean and all that you need. The shower was good and the water pressure excellent.

The bar and restaurant were excellent and if you wanted to stay in, you would be very happy. But you are in Rio so have a drink the in bar and get out there.

I just stayed there 3 nights ago. I'm a Marriott gold maember and was booked in a 1 bedroom ocean view suite so this review is specific to the room and the services I received as a gold member. From what I understand, the atrium rooms are quite depressing as they have no windows. Furthermore, the rooms in Rio are known to be extremely small. It is also important to note that I have moved to the Copacabana Palace. Had I not moved, I probably would have given this hotel 5 stars.

Check in was a breeze, highly recommend for you to book in an executive floor if you can, even better if you can get a 1 bedroom suite with ocean view. The check in is on the 9th floor where the lounge is and you get an exceptional view of Rio (probably one of the best views in town).

The suite was large (especially for Rio standards) - around 700 sq ft. Havaiana slippers for you to keep. Bathroom had nice finishes (but it looked like the shampoo and the conditioner was refilled rather than new). Bedding was comfortable. Perfect view - the view was probably the best part of it. If you have internet it is extremely fast at the Marriott (compared to the free/slow internet at Copacabana palace).

Concierge was decent but pretty non-helpful. They can give you basic information and needs. Again, now that I'm at the palace, the concierge there is at least 10X better/stronger/well connected.

Breakfast was included for me which was quite basic. They had a private area on the beach at Copa and the man servicing the area was quite attentive. It is a little bit far from the waves.

Checking out, there have been previous reviews talking about the currency. They are true, they use some sort of unfavorable exchange rate (which is apparently Brazilian law) so I recommend booking on some sort of travel agency and getting the flat rate (unless of course you're collecting points).

I paid for the suite what I paid for a regular superior room at the palace where I also don't have a view. I would take palace/no view any day of the week over JW, Suite, Free breakfast, fast internet, great view any day. (Suite prices out at around 720/night, Copacabana at around 700/night for superior room).

Room Tip: ocean view suite is probably the best practical room (they only have 1 bedroom suites and then it go...

We cannot say enough positive things about this hotel! We chose this hotel to spend our 25th Wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. The suite we had was fabuous and overlooked the atrium through the windows to the Ocean - gorgeous. We had a one bedroom 1.5 bath suite with hardwood floors, and 2 televisions - one in the living are and one in the bedroom. The extra half bath was so nice to have for our 8 day stay. We were very centrally located and could walk to Ipanema or all around Copacabana to explore. Cab rides to downtown were not too expensive. The staff was above and beyond friendly and surpised us with complimentary champagne and desserts in our room more than once. The 9th floor executive lounge was an unexpected delight. They provided an wonderful breakfast every morning and a fantastic light dinner and drinks every evening - all included based on your level of stay (husband is Platinum with Marriott). We would come back to this hotel without a second thought and will surely stay here again if we ever come back to Rio.

This is an excellent hotel, which cannot be faulted on any aspect of cleanliness, service, value and location. The hotel has an excellent rooftop swimming pool and is right on to the beach.

The hotel has a feel of quality and luxury as soon as you enter and we were not disappointed.

The hotel is very centrally located and we enjoyed walking along the beach before breakfast each morning.

Room Tip: The obvious tip is to get a room, which overlooks the beach but I am not sure if there are any rooms...

We spent five nights in an ocean view deluxe room which included breakfast. It is a lovely hotel and looks over Copacabana beach. Checking in was easy they were well informed and went over everything we may need to know. The room was spacious clean, we'll presented and the bathroom had really nice products lovely thick towels and was also clean. The bed was comfortable aaa nod the bedding superb. Breakfast was fantastic, such choice of hot and cold foods, eggs cooked at the buffet table. It was open for a long period of time so you could have a lie in and still get breakfast. They made a fresh juice every day which was fabulous. The swimming pool was on the roof there were comfortable beds and lovely towels and it was a pleasant space to lie in. They had a roof top bar and a basic menu during the week, however on Saturday and Sunday they had a chef and a barbecue which was really good, the food was superb and it was very popular with everyone. Beds were available on the beach with towels which we thought was a great idea. We had drinks and food in the bar which was really good except for the Sunday of our return visit when we returned for two days before coming home. All the food was of a poor standard and we returned all of it. The girl from San Paulo who was in charge of the bar was wonderful she supervised the food being cooked for the second time. Apologises we have forgotten her name!! It was perfect she apologised profusely for the food and gave us a free drink on the house. They knew exactly which drinks we liked to drink which I thought was excellent. So if you have a problem it is dealt with perfectly well. Our second stay for two nights was on the business floor which enabled us to use the business lounge where drinks were available during the day, snacks after 3p.m. Canapés and drinks after 6p.m. Our luggage was stored on this floor at the desk on our last day and we were able to sit in a comfortable lounge until we needed to go to the airport. A very enjoyable stay would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the business floor it is really worth it.
