“Classy Digs, Great View”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

This is a very upscale hotel on Copacabana Beach, right in the heart of Rio, but right on the beach, as well. It is safe, the food is first class, and so is the service. It is a place to "come home to" after a long sweaty day, doing some business, but also enjoying everything that makes Rio such a great city. You can shower, and relax in the air-conditioning in your room, or the hotel bar, while you wait for your Brazilian colleagues to show up (late, of course after all it's Rio) to take you to dinner. Expensive but very worth it!

Room Tip: Get a room high up that faces the beach, for a great view of the whole Rio beach scene.

The only good thing about the hotel is the view (and only if you pay for the ocean view rooms) ! I don't understand why people say it's a nice hotel because it really really needs a facelift. The rooms are very small and tired. No wifi in the rooms.

Staff is friendly, food is fine, but for that price go to another hotel.

We had to wait hours to check in to our room, and then we had the maids knocking on our door to see if we had extra towels to give other guests. Apparently they were backed up with laundry. We never felt like any of the staff was attentive. I would not stay here again unless I had to because of business. It is the best option in the Barra area but I was very
disappointed.

The Copa side of Rio really has come a long way, but, I'm afraid, this Marriott still has many of the standards of the old Copa.

The biggest problem is the inconsistency of the staff. From the indifferent, almost comically rude male staff at the front door who turn away and start talking to each other when they see taxis pull up or people struggling with their luggage to the pool bar staff who are pleasant but just stand around to the absurd cambio staff who refuse to change currency if it has wrinkles (but who will send a porter with you to the hotel next door who will change it). True, Rio in generally isn't known for its great service but it's a little disappointing, nonetheless, to encounter this kind of thing at a Marriott.

On the good side, the housekeeping is excellent (but be aware it is best to keep valuables in the room safe) as is the concierge.

For the novice tourist, this hotel is fine. For people who know hotels, the little things can be irritating and unpleasant and not worth the price.

The location is really great. We were lucky enough for a view room on Copacabana but i would not be happy if we got an interior room, so i know what other guests are talking about. The lobby needs new or reupholstered furniture, a bit worn as the carpets in the hallways. Rooms are small but not tiny.... Helpful concierge especially Carmen who was extremely helpful. Good continental breakfast. We booked a shuttle from the airport with Discovery but came late, waited over hour and half and gave the excuse "the flight from Iguassu is usually late" so they didn't come as we paid and booked it--did they consider checking the flight schedule? Consider taking the Marriott private car, sounds like a lot of money but only a difference of $10 compared to Discovery. Taxis to airport use only takes money. I had read too many guide books on how unsafe Rio is and i worried too much. Never felt threatened and walked any where in Copa and Ipanema neighborhoods. All shops closed on Sundays so limited things to do, so consider flying on Sunday. Went to Hippie Market in Ipanema on Saturday with lots of local artists. Easy to use Metro with only two lines. Don't go to Centro on Sunday. Word of advice:if the street looks bare don't go down it. Visted a favela very interesting on a tour. Chao...

Fantastic location on Copacabana beach. Room was OK but very expensive with a view of the interior. Offered an upgrade with sea view for even more cash. Breakfast buffet reasonable, staff exceptionally good. Room service was good but again expensive. Had to haggle to get free wi fi. This should be part of the deal for the prices they charge. The city itself is awesome. One of the must see places in the world.

I stayed here during a business trip, because I wanted to pick an American hotel where the receptionists can speak English -- not true in Brazil in general, even in big cities like Rio
and Sao Paulo -- and located in a safe area (The other option I considered was Sheraton)

Overall, the room was nice and the view (only in Oceanview Room, not Atrium View Room) was
what you would expect -- absolutely breath-taking. I've gotten a great deal -- so I thought, an
oceanview junior suite at a regular oceanview room price, so the room is more spacious than
the typical rooms, with access to the lounge. The bed was very comfortable too.

The staff are courteous and polite. To my surprise, nearly everyone, including the cleaning
staff, can speak some amount of decent English. This is a sharp contrast to my earlier
experience at Sao Paulo area and outside of this hotel in Rio, where just about only a handful of
people can speak English.

Overall, I have the best experience here among the three hotels I stayed in Brazil -- but I also
ended up paying more than twice here, when compared to other hotels (one of them was a
resort hotel near Sao Paulo and the other is a 4-star hotel). When I booked at this hotel, the
quote was given to me in USD (converting to Brazilian reals was not even an option). When I checked in, the price was also written in US dollars as well. However, when I checked out, the
front desk used an off-market rate that is more than 20% higher to convert the room rate back to
Brazilian reals that was then converted back to USD by credit card company. With all the
conversions, I ended up paying MORE THAN $65 USD PER NIGHT than the original price
quote I was given . With tax, etc. I ended spending an EXTRA $300++ USD over 4 nights
THAN the quoted price I was given at the booking time! I ended paying much more than
I otherwise would at Sheraton. (I chose Marriott over Sheraton for the difference of $40 per
night, but I ended up paying MUCH more at Marriott for the same type of junior suites.)

I consider such a practice a gimmick and would advise others to watch out when you book
your room at this hotel. Otherwise it is a very nice hotel, but very pricey.

Room Tip: Get the price quote in local currency! The Atrium View room really doesn't have much view. W...
