“Average hostel in Copacabana”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

For R$25 per night for a dorm bed in Copacabana, one should not complain much; but in case the prices change, a review is needed. The dorm bedrooms are ridiculously crammed in, at least 2 sets of bunk beds need to be removed from each room. The mattress themselves are fine, no complaints there. There is about a 2 feet distance between the top bunk and bottom bunk, so if you lift your head up a bit too high, while tossing and turning at night, you will hit your head.
Breakfast is good...grilled-cheese maker, ham and cheese, cake and some fruits are offered...and they're pretty relaxed with the time and let it go over for the guests who are waking up late.
The "clean up" crew of the fridge every week is a bit shady....they did it 1 day early and mysteriously my super-expensive juice was empty in the trash (along w/ missing veggies); almost caught them red-handed drinking it, but didn't, so i can't point fingers. so just be sure to label all your bags clearly so they can't blame that reason for it being "thrown out".
The front desk people are nice and the bartender. I had arranged for a transfer with the hostel, and when I arrived there was no one waiting for me, so I called them and was instructed to just take a taxi and that they would pay for it....and they did, which was awesome, because that could've ended up being a much a bigger headache than it was.
Location is near a lot of different super markets and salgado stores, and not too far from the beach.

Nice place, well located, just 5 minutes on foot from Copabana beach
Good value for money and the staff is really cool !

Only problem was that I booked during the Rock in Rio festival and so prices went up to 80 reais for 1 night in a 6 bed dorm !!! well, can't blame them.

El misti has a diverse culture as travellers from all around the world stay here, it is a great place to make new friends. The hostel is relatively safe as there are cameras along the passages and at the entrance, however padlocks are necessary. If you are looking for an inexpensive hostel to stay in while in Rio, this is the place for you. As a group of students from Johannesburg South Africa, we enjoyed our stay. Obrigado!!

Best location ever : metro, copacabana beach, emergency health care center (UPA), easy to get a bus also to any destination.Very nice receptionist, helpfull and friendly. Best caipirinha in Rio with a bartender from south Africa. Big kitchen and tiny, you can cook with pleasure. From midnight, the cyber internet is free. The rooms and toilett are cleaned up every day. Good tips if you want to go out. Dinner with excellent menu, and the price is cheap. I met such nice people in there. I highly appeciate and recomend. Viva El Misti Rio.

Room Tip: Rooms in the opposite side of the street are very calm. But if you want to have less people in the r...

Rooms are really cramped and the bunk space is so small that you can barely even sit up in bed. Staff are apathetic at best. Tiny bathrooms. Common areas are too small for the number of guests. Would not stay there again. In fact, I moved to another hostel as soon as I could

Stayed here for a few nights after the time of Carnaval, but had to leave because of a mistake the receptionist made that they wouldn't take responsibility for (thank god, much better to leave).
The hostel is located great, walking distance from the beach, right across a metro station and a bus station.
The staff are usually helpful (though not trustworthy as I said) and the small bar is nice.. kitchen is equipped great.
The rooms are super-small and you'll have trouble finding space for all your stuff. The showers are also small and not that convinient.
When in Rio, such a great city, you can find better hostels that represent way better value for money, just look good enough.

Yesterday we left el misti rio (30.5.13).
The hostel is located in a great place really close to the metro station, and five minutes walking from coacabana beach. The breakfast is really good. But - the rooms are tiny as hell. The first night we got nice room with private bathroom. The second night we were asked to move to a room on the third floor, that cost us the same price. It was tiny, stinky and without private bathroom (whice the water was freezing cold). What made us angry is that there were alot of empty rooms that we could be moved to, and they werent under construction or smthing. But above all, i wont forget the bad behavior of the receptionist man. It was the worst i've seen so far on my trip. When people asked for information about rio, he pointed on the wall and said "its all written there". I think u could find better places in rio.
