“Think carefully about staying here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014 via mobile

Myself and my boyfriend stayed at this hostel for 5 nights during March. I can only say that I was thoroughly disappointed with the hostel and the attitude of some of the staff. The location is incredibly difficult both in terms of safety and access. As many other guests have pointed out it is far up a hill around 10 mins from lapa and close to 15 from Santa Theresa. Currently there is no bus service on the hostel road to take you to santa Theresa and if you do wish to go you are limited to either a dicey walk where we saw people mugged at knife point (the second that night from the hostel) in front of us or waiting 20-30 mins for a local minibus that has been put on to replace the city buses during the tram works. This makes it quite difficult to eat out as no taxis wish to access the area because of the ongoing works on the street and refuse taxi journeys to Santa Theresa claiming it is too short a ride. Lapa is not far with a few eating options but still involves a rough walk back
If you want to self cater which we did a number of times there is a kitchen that is a bit limited and perhaps could have been better stocked, ie more sharp knives (there was only one).

Our room in particular was a dorm that smelt pretty vile and needed a good clean. When other guests have said that the rooms are cleaned daily this was not true of our experience of the dorms as only our bin was removed each day. The air conditioning in the room however is good and crucial in the hot times of the day. There are lockers that are a little small but were good enough for what we needed them for.

Breakfast was good to begin with however by a two days in the fruit and juices disappeared the bread remained stale and there was no cereal. We mentioned this to the staff who said she could not do anything about it and it was not her problem. When I asked her if there was anything she could do about it she responded to tell me that she had to wait for her boss to come in and deal with it at 1030. However breakfast finished at 1030 so that was pretty useless.

There were some nice members of staff who worked there and were willing to help. However some of the other staff just lounged around on the bean bags and sofas playing music.

Ultimately our stay was hampered by the location, not the aesthetics of the hostel. Being 15-20 mins walk from the nearest metro and a 45 min bus ride from ipanema beach was frustrating and meant that going anywhere in the city except downtown or the cbd was pretty slow. The lack of nice supermarkets to grab food at compounded by the problems with eating out locally made it pretty difficult to relax.

If you are a SOLO traveller I would not recommend going here due to these problems and safety concerns you would be much better off in ipanema where tourist safety seems a bit better and there are loads of options to eat out safely and grab food at many of the supermarkets.

Even if you don't stay here I would deinitely recommend lapa as a great place to go out on a Friday night with some of the
best nightlife around. The street parties are amazing and some of the samba clubs are great.

Dear guests,

Thank you for taking the time to write your impressions. I´m the owner of Bossa in Rio and, on behalf of everybody from Bossa, I would like to apologize to you that you didn´t have a pleasant stay with us.

As you've mentioned, there is a renovation work of the tram´s track going on at the moment and it for sure, makes access temporarily harder for everyone.

We truly understand your complaint, especially because you stayed with us during the first days they closed part of the street in front of our hostel for this renovation. Unfortunately, the hostels and the people that live in our street were not informed about anything regarding it in advance, so nobody had time to prepare for it. That for sure impacted our guests and also our suppliers that found it hard to deliver our groceries on these first days.

Luckily all this renovation work will soon be over and the famous Santa Teresa yellow tram will be running again. With the tram back on track, guests will have an extra (and very nice) way to access our hostel. When the work in complete, buses will be running again and taxis will be coming up and going down with no restriction.

In our common kitchen, guests will find everything they need to cook a nice meal. Every time a guest recommends us to buy a new item, we purchase it ASAP. More sharp knives will be available as from tomorrow. Thank you for recommending it.

All our rooms are cleaned daily, but a room that can be shared by 10 or 6 people is indeed more difficult to keep clean. I talked to our staff about it and the cleaning process in these dorms will be supervised from a closer distance, so we can guarantee future guests won´t have any problem.

Most of all, I would like to apologize to you about our staff member that “lounged around” and didn´t help you as they were supposed to. I take all responsibility since this member was not adequately trained. We, at Bossa in Rio, have as a policy to do our very best for the guests and the attitude you described is the opposite of what we intend to do.

In case you are coming back to Rio, we want to offer you a free night stay at Bossa in Rio. It would be good if you could give us another opportunity to provide you with our usual services, and try to improve your perceptions.

Best regards

This hostel was a great find for us! We enjoyed our stay immensely & would recommend it to other backpackers who like a relaxed atmosphere (rather than party hostels) & lots of stairs. We booked 4 nights at a reasonable rate via booking.com & found the staff to be very helpful during our check in process- bringing us nice cold water while we paid for our rooms with a credit card. The room was cool, sunny & clean when we arrived & each bed had an individual power outlet, privacy curtain & a reading light. Lockers are available in the rooms also however we found them to be a little small & there were not enough for the number of beds in the room.
The rooms are cleaned daily which is lovely & the air-conditioning & wifi all worked well.
The kitchen was very modern & functional albeit a tad small (if if's just two people in there at a time, it's fine).
Breakfast each morning included a variety of prepared fresh fruits (so good), breads (often a bit stale tasting so recommend toasting!), dulche de leche, corn flakes, coffee, tea & drinking chocolate. This was actually one of the better hostel breakfasts we've enjoyed on our trip so far- even despite the less-than-fresh bread!!
Their are a fair few stairs within the hostel & in the surrounding area... Be prepared for a daily workout! We didn't mind at all, however it's worth mentioning for anyone who might find this bothersome. There is no disabled access to the hostel.
Just down the hill is the historic Lapa neighbourhood with a variety of conveniences available- supermarket, fruit & vegetable stores, pharmacies, many bars, restaurants, & ATMs. You can easily walk in to Santa Teresa as well where you'll find some more spots to eat & drink & explore. My partner & I commonly caught buses to other parts of Rio from Lapa & found this to be really easy. With all of that said, the Lapa/Santa Teresa area has been known at times to be a little dicey especially on some of those big stair cases - in fact, we witnessed a mugging a few blocks down from the hostel! So while the hostel itself is very secure (you have to ring a bell to get in to the complex) you need to take care while out & about.

We had a great time for the week we stayed at Bossa. The staff were really helpful and the private room we had was really nice. We sometimes found it hard to get taxi's take us back to the area, but they were doing roadworks at the time. Otherwise location was closeto a fair amount of restaurants and bars.

Beautiful place to spend a few days. The place is very clean and well treated by the staff. The shuttle from the hostel to the main tourist attractions is very good.

Common areas and kitchen are very good as well and ordered large rooms, good breakfast.

We have stayed in pousada Bossa Hostel early weeks ago and loved this place:
- the rooms are lovely, clean and very nicely decorated
- the all staff were so welcoming, nice and helpful
- the breakfast prepared was amazing
- the location was very good
Also you can leave anything in your bag in the room, nobody will touch it ;
You can also leave your bag if you go away for some days and don’t want to take all your luggage. Excellent Rio experience!

A switchback path and plenty of stairs are inevitable when staying in a hilly location but it was good to be back in Santa Teresa.
I was in a clean 4-bed dorm (with clean showers and toilets next door) after being picked up from the airport as arranged.
The morning revealed the colourful and floral hostel and its surroundings.
Breakfast was basic but plentiful, and enjoyably taken on the patio sheltered from the warm rain and overlooking the tropical garden foliage.
Excellent information and maps were provided by both the hostel reception and the tourist information booth by the Lapa aqueduct a few minutes walk downhill.
Wandering around the neighborhood with its huge, colourful murals (especially the ones showing how much the locals miss their streetcar) was a particular delight.
I could only stay one night but would happily have stayed longer.
