It´s definitely a case of taking the rough with the smooth at this place. The location is great being a 5 minute walk from Copacobana beach and a 15 min one from Ipanema so if that is your priority, you are laughing. If not, well ....

Via internet we´d booked a family room but offered an alternative, we switched to a 1 bedroom flat on the 12th floor of an block a 100m or so from the reception.

I know it´s a hostel but I was expecting the basics to be right. I could ignore the cock roach I saw in the bathroom (lets face it, they´re everywhere), the broken tiles, the pointless TV (pointless as the reception was so poor) and the ripped upholstery of the sofa, but the next day the water gave out.

When we pointed this out and they eventually came to check it out, they couldn´t get anyone to do anything about it and so moved us to another flat on the 8th floor of another block which had become available.

Given the hostel appears to be spread over several floors of several different blocks, I`d have thought it would make sense to have someone they could call in the event of a plumbing issue, but the new apartment was much nicer, so maybe this worked to our advantage. The TV was LCD and it even had reception. However there was no hot water, despite there being a boiler. It being summer and me being a European, cold showers were not a problem.

Breakfast was included and was served from 7.30-10, however there are only about 6 tables for 24 people for an establishment that can accomodate, at a guess, at least a hundred people. Unless you got there at a good time you had to stand around waiting for a table or eat standing up.

Couple that with the fact there was one `two slice` toaster and one toasted sandwich maker resulting in mind numbing queues and one slice of ham and one of chease per person handed out by an attendant that looked like she´d rather be in bed the concept of the included breakfast lost any attraction.

The place has a chill out area and a plunge pool all of which looked like a good place to hang out but are you really going to go to a hostel near the Copacobana and Ipánema beaches and not take advantage of them?

I´ll definitely look harder for an alternative next time.

Just stayed couple of nights at Copa Hostel and I strongly recommend travellers to STAY AWAY!
1. RODENTS: The place is infested with bed bugs and cockroaches... they are just eveywhere...
2. CLEANLINESS: The only "clean" place is the showers area. Bedrooms and hallways are urine-stunk...
3. FOOD: The breakfast is opaque and inimaginative: 1 slice of cheese/ham, a fruit, coffee, milk, and a punch drink (no natural juices, and we are in brazil, the land of tropical fruits...)...
4. STAFF: The staff is, with rare exception, quite unfriendly... it seems as they all had a bad night of sleep...
5. WI-FI: The wi-fi is sporadic and irregular... In the bedrooms it is a lucky day when it works... outside of the reception area, you are the weakest link, literally!
6. ATMOSPHERE: The noise level at night can be overwhelming... this is a hostel-internet shop-call center-disco... So, sleeping at night before 6am is not possible because of the loud music under your bedroom.
By any standard, this is the worst hostel experience a person can have. I regret having gone there.
Positive aspects: it is centrally-located, that is all!

Me and my fiancee stayed for a few days in this hotel, in the double ensuite room.
It has a great location and room with TV and minibar, which we liked a lot. However when we arrived, there was a terrible smell of urine in the hallway, second night the room smelled of sewage, and a coackroach sneaked through under the door; they cleaned the room and exchange towels and sheets only every three days, still when we checked out they asked if we smoked the room, "cos it seemed to smell". Really? We felt ofendded. Not the worst hostel we stayed in Rio but not a bargain either. You get what you pay for and honestly? You can get a cheap yet proper hotel for that price. Don't recommend.

they also rent flats in the hostel which are nearby

our flat was not nice at all, it smelled terrible inside, the sofa to sleep on near the bed (we stayed there with 4 people) was dirty and very uncomfortable to sleep on it

we could see the sea from our window which couldnt totally be closed

the bathroom was terrible, the flush was so weak, we better did not use the toilet or put any paper inside

I would not recommend to go there

the service from the hostel was good

Firstly, the hostel staff are friendly and the front office appears fine, there is a nice terrasse and plentiful computers and wi-fi. More importantly, the actual sleeping space. They have a system off booking you in the hostel and then moving you to an apartment down the street. The apartment is in a building with no attendant or security, the rooms in the apartment are musty and the foam mattresses are damp, old and some have bugs. Very uncomfortable experience. The other 'guests' staying in the apartment are employees of the hostel, as in the hostel maid was sleeping on the couch next to the bathroom. Nothing was stolen but the lack of security at the buildings door and the constant coming-and-going of people made it seem extremely unsafe. Good luck if you have to stay here. At 70 Real/night it is overpriced for the area (most hostel dorm beds are 45 Real) and you will feel very uncomfortable.

Hi,

I normally 100% use this website to read reviews of hostels as i travel around. But after my experience in this hostel in Rio, i made sure that when i got back home...i sign up to Tripadvisor just to write a bad review for this hostel.

The service was shockingly bad, we paid 170 R$ (a hell of a lot for Rio) for a private twin apartment overlooking copa beach. So for that money...u would expect no bed bugs and friendly service from all hostel staff. This was not the case, i got into 2 major arguments with the staff and manager...here is why:

1) I was not allowed to use the internet for even 10mins after 10pm. There was no signs up saying i cant use the computer....they just make up rules as and when the like. They just told me to get off in a harsh way with no respect. After i made my point...the manager was acting very cocky with me...so i made a scene about it. He went on to tell me, he doesn't care about the fat that i was upset over not being allowed 2 send my important e-mail..and that he would rather flow hostel rules rather then help guests. lol...what a joke! so these are the kind of people you are dealing with. I met many other ppl who also had bad things to say about the staff....they are so cocky and just chase women guests..not giving a dam about your needs.

2) After getting literally bitten alive at night in the 5th floor apartment.....we checked out of the room 30mins late...and the guy said we wont get our 50R$ deposit back. so i told him in a nice way, look we didn't sleep much that night because we were 2busy killing bugs on our beds which were massive and plentiful. He had no sympathy and went on 2 say we were lying and that they have no bed bugs there. He was scared of what the owner would make of this that's why he denied it. I cant believe a body full of massive gr8 big bites was not enough proof for this clown behind reception. The guy had the cheek to say that we brought the bed bugs in from another hostel via our towels. lol. i wish i took a picture of my bed which cost £40 for the night.....bugs everywhere!

Summary:
Good Points - good location seconds from copa beach
Bad Points - bed bugs, rude and arrogant staff expensive place, not helpful to tourists, back stabbing and will take your money in a flash at every opportunity.

DO NOT STAY HERE! watch out for a guy in reception called Carlos & some manger with long hair and a beard...they are like snakes!
