We arrived just as the offices were closing, so had to wait 15 mins or so for a table. This traditional and famous cafe has been serving Cariocas since the late nineteenth century. The walls are lined with mirrors from Belgium and the marble tables are from Italy. The service was good, but the food disappointing, my pastel de Belem was far too stodgy not a patch on the real thing in Portugal. But you don't go there for the food, the atmosphere and ambience are wonderful.
Its sister cafe at the Copacabana Fort serves the same food, but the restaurant is dull and noisy. Better to sit outside if you can, where the views across the bay to Copacabana beach are unparalled.
