Owner description: Join renowned Brazilian chef Yara Castro Roberts and retired French/American executive Richard Roberts to prepare and enjoy together a refined Brazilian dinner with the best of Brazilian cuisine. The menus are from six regional and historical cuisines such as Minas Gerais, Bahia, Amazonas, Cerrado. These are also the subject of our new book “The Brazilian Table” that have been nominated and a finalist at International book awards. The evening begins at 8:00 PM sharp and end about 11:30. We start by serving a caipirinha and Richard Roberts shows a unique way to make it. Next, guests are invited to gather around the stove to join or just watch the preparation of the dishes. Then we all sit at our decorated table and enjoy the four-course dinner we made together, with wine from Argentina or Chile. We end with coffee or mint tea and a tasting of aged cachaça.

“Delicious food, creative concept, nice couple!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2011

This friendly couple, the brazilian master chef and his husband, the french manager, offer a very interesting gourmet experience in their own house/restaurant, hosting you for a few hours while she cooks, teachs and tell some histories. Delicious, funny and very "interactive" experience. I do recomend!

“Cooking lessons and so much more......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2011

Yara and her husband Richard provide what, in our experience of travelling around the world, is a unique blend of the warmest of warm welcomes, trully informative cooking lessons (learning to cook as you CAN cook at home rather than excessively professional with gadgets and equipement you will not have in your own kitchen) and a non-stop commentary on life, history, Brazilian ingredients and innumerable anecdotes that make an evening with them a highly memorable experience.
Yara brings a wealth of Brazilian cooking experience to her classes and manages to transmit them to us in the simples and easiest of ways. What you learn to cook with Yara you not only CAN cook at home BUT YOU WILL WANT TO!
And looking after the "back offic" is the incomparable Richard - world traveller, photographer and one of the most affable, charming and urbane individuals you could ever hope to meet.
Many years of a clearly delightfully happy married life shine through all that Yara and Richard do - in their charming inter-relationship, in their charming home (where the cooking classes take place) and in the fascinating lessons and information that they provide.
And all that right the in the heart of the Historic Center of Paraty in an original and tastefully renovated colonial house.
DO NOT MISS THIS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY!! It is a must.

“Paid like princes, ate like paupers”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2011

The evening was enjoyable and the conversation interesting. We learned little from the cooking class. The food was modest at best. Our entrée was Risotto. Yes, our main course was rice. If they paid more than 20R$ for all the ingredients of our meal, they paid too much. We paid 180R$ per person. Not a good value.

The owners want to start by saying that we appreciate Trip advisor’s professionalism in giving us timely notice of this - our first - negative report, and the opportunity to respond here.

This particular reviewer starts with the comment that the evening was enjoyable and the conversation interesting, and adds comments about modest food and “we” learned little. However, the other guests that evening give high praise. The spouse of the reviewer, for example, wrote in our book: had a most wonderful evening, great food, well taught. And a French couple the same evening wrote: délicieux repas, découvertes, chaleureuse soirée.

A bit of context is useful at this point. What we do here is to provide an evening about Brasil that includes food, history and conversation about life in Brasil today. Depending on the week, the four course menus are based on one of six regional and historical cuisines including Minas Gerais, Bahia, Amazonas, and the Cerrado. We invite the guests to learn by joining in the preparation of the dishes, or they can choose to just watch with their caipirinha at hand. At our dining table that seats a maximum of 8 people they enjoy wine from Argentina or Chile and we end with coffee, mint tea and a tasting of one of Brazil’s best oak aged cachaças.

The reviewer goes on to state, “we” learned little. Again, “I” would be more accurate than “we”. Beyond the usual cooking techniques, guests were shown ways to deal specifically with the ingredients of that evening’s Minas Gerais recipes: how to cook black beans so they are not only tasty but also easy to digest; how to make the Italian arboreal rice blend with the farm produced thin sausage (difficult to obtain so we don’t make this menu very often) to produce a velvety risotto; how to slice collard greens paper thin and cook them a few seconds in oil at just the right temperature to ensure they were crisp yet fresh, making a green nest for the quail eggs; how to make a Brazilian crème brúlée desert using fresh corn.

Finally we come to what looks to be the biggest burr under the reviewer’s saddle: the price of rice that this person decides to equate with the worth of the evening. This is a surprising conclusion since, before deciding to attend, the reviewer knew both the price and the menu as posted on the outside wall.

“Fabulous evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2011 via mobile

Richard and Yara are the most fabulous hosts. The food is wonderful, the house charming, the conversation as engaging as it is educational. Yara displayed the patience of a saint in teaching our kids (9 & 12), some great recipes. Cannot recommend highly enough.

“An excellent evening! Highly reccommended!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2011

What a great evening we had! Yara and Richard were so welcoming and entertaining. They were full of knowledge and we chatted until all of a sudden the night was over. We must have enjoyed oursleves! We made Caipirinhas and a four course meal, with the best mousse I have ever eaten!

Highly reccomended!
