“Charming pousada! Amazing location and the nicest staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013 via mobile

I am so happy I chose this pousada! I was traveling by myself, but the staff was so helpful helping me book all my day trips and giving me suggestions for dinner, that I never felt uneasy.
Extraordinary location, in the middle of the historical centre so you can walk to the best restaurants and bars, plus the port and the beachfront is only 1 street away.
Breakfast buffet is really yummy. They have private parking which is a plus. Really nice pool. Another plus of the pousada is that they have a sauna and steam room, and a massage room where you can get treatments from the best spa in Paraty.
Totally recommend to anyone.

This is among the top-tier of accommodation in Paraty (by location, size, price, facilities). The rooms are very pretty and tastefully furnished, but it needs much better attention to detail at this level, in particular the demeanour of the staff. Unlike mostly anywhere else, this place has no genuine warmth. It is almost unwelcoming

The staff come across mostly exactly like the those of cheap corporate hotel, poorly trained, lacking in confidence, and indifferent to any issues or need for improvement.

In the week we stayed (two rooms), for example:
- It never took less than 20 minutes to receive a drink ordered, despite the fact the bar never had more the 3 customers.
- Both rooms stank of mold (from the air conditioning).
- Wifi was completely unusable (yes Paraty is low bandwidth, but most bigger establishments pay for more than one line - not here)
- They didn't know how to make a mojito (even though it's on the cocktail menu - barman asked if it was OK without mint)
- Directions given by reception were vague / useless
- Something simple like trying to print a page or two, took many attempts ("you'll have to email it to us", "we didn't receive it", etc.etc,)

After a few days we did find one (non-Brazilian) receptionist who took a bit more care, but even she was apparently helpless to actually resolve any of the minor issues, and came across, like the other staff, with a kind of resigned misery or mild subjugation .

Choose any other of the 4 similar pousadas here.

Dear Mr. Other1,

It was a pleasure to receive you and your lovely family at Pousada do Ouro.
We are very sorry to know that our service did not reach your expectations.
Anyway we would like to thank you for your review and suggestions because they are the ones that make us improve our service constantly.
The opinion of our guests is very important for us.

We would like to apologize for the unsatisfactory bar service. Currently we have new bar staff being trained and they still need to improve. We have called special attention of the barmen to your comments and reoriented them in order that these faults don’t repeat themselves again. We do have weekly trainings but even though errors may occur. The Brazilian urge to improvise sometimes goes beyond what’s acceptable (like the mojito catastrophe).

About the “mold” smell, we have entered both rooms and would like to inform that we do clean the air conditioning machines twice a year and the filters once a month. All rooms are opened daily so fresh air can come in. Even though we will monitor these rooms with special attention to your comment.

The fastest internet speed available inside the historical center is 512 kb, so other hotels in the historical centre can only offer the same.
Despite we have more than one line to provide the internet service, in fact it’s not as fast as in a big city, so it takes some patience to use it. Since at the moment it’s unfortunately out of our hands to guarantee a faster internet connection, we do not charge for it as other hotels do. Of course we are always searching for a better option for our guests and as soon as the city provides a faster connection we will surely acquire it and offer it to our guests. Even for our back office it would be very valuable.
That explains why it may take some minutes until we can print e-mails with attachments.

Our whole reception staff is available and able to give directions, book tours, tranfers, recommend restaurants, give very good tips about the best spots to visit and other services.
Your comments on the conduct of our front desk staff surprised us, since, as it’s possible to see in other reviews, they are always highly praised for promptness, dedication and the ability to solve the most various types of situations. We would be very pleased if you could contact us through our reservation e-mail, and let us know what were the information they could not help you with.
As much as a compliment a complaint is welcome and gives us the opportunity to improve or if necessary, to change our way of doing.

We hope in a next visit we will be able to change your mind about our service.
Best regards.

Yours sincerely,
Pousada do Ouro and team

We arrived in Rio, for two days, and then took a private car to Paraty. The cobblestone streets were alarming at first, but once we arrived at the Pousada do Ouro we fell in love with Paraty. The hotel staff were amazing. Even though we were told when we made the reservation that our room would probably not be ready when we arrived ... it was and they took all of our luggage (5 of us in our party) to the rooms, which was across the way and through a courtyard. We had two rooms that were spacious, beautiful and clean. The rooms had everything we needed and could want. The beds were great, perfect. The hotel staff arranged for us to go to the waterfalls by private taxi within an hour. It was a fun time. We returned to the hotel swimming pool, small but just fine. We ordered our caparinas and had a relaxing hour or two. The town is so cute and we enjoyed a fabulous meal at one of the restaurants the hotel recommended. They also arranged a boat trip for us the next day. That was the best day of our time in Brazil. The boat went to several islands which had the most beautiful waters we've ever seen. Aqua blue, clean and calm. We couldn't have asked for more from the hotel and their staff. The breakfast buffet, by the way, was fantastic. We also ate lunch at the pool bar on our departure which was quick and good. I can't say enough about the staff. They will bend over backwards to help you plan your time and arrange anything you want to do.

This is a great place! We stayed for three nights, having booked through Imagine Latin America (who I would thoroughly recommend). We were in a superior room across the road, on an upper floor. The room was not the poshest of our South American trip but had everything we needed, including a very comfortable bed. The location is truly peaceful and we loved the various lounges where you could just curl up with a book. The pool area was very nice and super-clean too. Breakfast in a charming colonial room and lots of restaurants nearby for evening meal (we enjoyed Bartholomews, just round the corner). Reception staff very helpful with fluent English.

As others have said, Paraty takes only a couple of hours to see but it is lovely, with some wonderful architecture in the old colonial style and some very colourful buildings. The schooner trips from the harbour are a nice way of filling the day, with lots of swim stops and on ours - recommended by the receptionist as one of the smaller boats with the whole family involved as crew - an unexpectedly tasty lunch.

We travelled with our two year old daughter, and a hire car. Our room was in the main complex...there is an adjoining complex across the road, it looked nice, but we didn't go in...so maybe check with the hotel where your room is as some reviews haven't been too positive on the adjoining complex.

Hotel has a car park, which is a little hard to find, but otherwise okay. There is a wonderful pool, lounge area and lobby for relaxing. There is no room service, per se...you have to order from the restaurant down the road. The public areas and pool are big enough for our two year old to run around, and it was close to nearby attractions.

The rooms are wonderful...our room was a suite I think...it had a large ante room, with dining and sun lounge, the main bedroom was very large and the bathroom was also very large. The rooms was very clean, with wooden blackout shutters.

It is an excellent hotel, in a good location, with super friendly staff. Bed was super comfortable, too.

The staff speak excellent English, and were so friendly, helping us with bookings, organising a (very) early breakfast at 4am (before the kitchen had opened), and even with directions once we had left the hotel and gotten ourselves hopelessly lost en route to São Paulo! Wonderful, kind and friendly staff.

Things to consider: we had one night where it was hard to get to sleep because of a band playing in the nearby square. The Internet failed once or twice because if a town wide blackout (it also took out the landline) - I had some calls so this was inconvenient. However, neither of these are hotel specific. Finally, it is on the expensive side (we paid around US$275 per night), but then Brazil is a very expensive country I found).

Room Tip: We had a suite upstairs in the main complex, overlooking the internal courtyard...awesome!

We stayed here 4 nights and loved it! Great ambience, beautiful building, lovely pool area with a great pool for small children and very friendly staff. Food is great. Only comment is that the because of the heavy rainfall the room was a bit damp and it was a bit dark. Enough lights but not a lot of daylight.

I loved our stay in this beautiful Pousada... Let me first mention that quality of accommodation combined with good service is a bit of a 'hit &miss' in Brazil altogether. So this place is well ahead of any competitors.

1. Location is superb as it is placed conveniently in the historic and arty center of Parati as well as being close to the pier where all tour boats are departing from. It is in a quiet part of the town, however just 5 minutes on foot and you will be enjoying live music and great food.
2. We got upgraded by the hotel manager unexpectedly since they found out from our travel agent that it was my mum's 60th birthday trip. The suite was superb, clean and beautifully decorated in traditional local style retaining most of the quirky fittings of this building

3. Service was great especially by lovely Desiree and Maria Clara. They were very well spoken, helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.

4. Breakfast was good too ... Lovely fresh fruits, breads with cheeses and meats, lovely selection of teas, good quality coffee as well as scrambled egg etc.

5. Hotel has a small pool as well as steam room and sauna. Laundry service is very affordable and could be done on a same day. Definitely a good place to freshen up your wardrobe if you are on a long tour of Brazil like we were.

We hope you enjoy this lovely hotel as much as we did. Thank you
