“Perfect hideaway...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

We stayed 2 nights in the Eco Premium Suite, with comfy lounge chairs on the balcony and a killer view! Secluded and peaceful, it was lovely showering with the view and waking up in the morning, pulling back the curtains and seeing the colours of the bay. 2 for 1 drinks during Happy Hour (5pm to 7pm) at the bar and they serve dinner too, if you book ahead before 7pm for your meal.

Staff were helpful with advice on day trips and transfers back to Rio and the hotel boat will pick you and and drop you off an the main pier. Alternatively, its a short walk into town, but bring a torch as it gets very dark at night!

When we arrived we used the hotel kayaks to paddle around the bay and nearby beaches, then took a boat to Lopez Mendez beach the following morning. Ask at Reception and they will call and request that the boat pick you up directly from Asalem (and drop you back off) at no extra cost. They can also arrange private taxi boats to take you to other beaches and bays of your choice.

Would definitely recommend Asalem if you're looking for a secluded part of the island to kick back and relax away from the other hostels and pousadas in the main town!

Room Tip: The Eco-Premium has an unbeatable view and was very comfortable.

My Fiance and I stayed in Asalem recently and had an amazing time there. The place is located off the main drag in the town, and is nestled near a path that leads to a couple of the local beaches in Ilha Grande. We found the staff to be incredibly helpful during our stay (Thank you Vanessa and Co!). Willing to help us set up just about anything we wanted to do (from Water Taxi's to Tour's around the island to Packing a lunch for us for our Day at Lopes Mendes Beach). We had a great time exploring the beauty of the island from there and taking suggestions from the hotel staff. Dinner there at night was not just in a beautiful setting but delicious. Highly recommend there specialty stew. And the dinner service was really wonderful. We stayed in one of the more modest priced rooms, and despite some people speaking negatively about it, we had a very nice stay there and it had everything we needed and expected.

The only negatives on Asalem are things that come with the territory when planning to go away to a remote island that is praised for it's rustic nature and embrace of the environment around it. The power seems to go down there a bit due to bad storms and island infrastructure. This proved to be a challenge getting in touch with the hotel when we arrived as there phone was down, but what else would you expect when you are traveling to a place with such surroundings?

Overall I would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves remote environments, beaches and a bit of adventure in a beautiful place. I hope to come back very soon and would GLADLY stay here again and recommend to all my friends.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the more modest priced rooms and it had everything we needed. We didn't plan...

We spent three beautiful days at Asalem...originally it was supposed to be just 2 nights, but once we got there and saw our accommodations in the Eco Honeymoom suite, we decided to stay longer.
Beautiful location, relaxing laid-back vibe, great service. As other reviewers said, it's rustic, but we found it just perfect. Also loved the asalem boat, our means of transportation (besides hiking) for our days there.
My husband and I could have sat for hours on the restaurant deck, looking out the at view.
Eco Honeymoon suite is a splurge, but worth it, with its view from the shower out through the palm trees out to the sea. Private deck with hammock, too. See attached photo.
Carrying very fond memories with us. A dreamy place.

We stayed here on the first stage of our honeymoon for Christmas 2013. The place is literally paradise. We stayed in the Eco Honeymoon suite which was out of this world. Beautiful room with a beautiful view. Felt like you were the only people there but only a skip to the bar/restaurant. If you want out and out luxury this place isn't for you but if you want laid back service and a real laid back vibe then it's perfect. The town is a bit samey but you are far enough away to not care... Stunning.

Room Tip: Eco honeymoon suite is astonishing

Great getaway from the other hostels and buzzing village. Set on private bay area. Hotel provides kayaks, canoes etc to go explore on your own. Nice base camp feeling, staff very friendly. Must be prepared for "eco" side of stay.. toilet paper not allowed to be thrown in toilet. Don't go in January as sea water isn't very clear, not best for snorkelling and swimming.

We stayed in the Eco Honeymoon Suite towards the front of the property - right on the water, and next to the main building housing the kitchen. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect place to relax for a few days - very clean room, and the service was excellent in terms of helping plan excursions, transfers, etc.

The location is one of Asalem's best features - close enough to hike to town, but a quick boat transfer away if you don't feel like hoofing it. It was the perfect balance of isolation and access to the town and nearby beaches.

The restaurant is not to be missed - the fish with bananas was so good we had it two nights in a row, and watching the sun set over the bay while sitting at the restaurant's bar was incredibly romantic. Hope to return some day.

We had three nights on the island over Christmas 2013.

You pay for the luxury of staying in the jungle, not the facilities!

We booked the chalet which is an old brick cottage at the back of the block. It is private and clean but it is far from fancy so if you want luxe style then book the honeymoon suite or Eco rooms. Based on the website pics, we assumed we would have a hammock and open doors to look forward to, but the Chalet was not pictured on the website and in fact we had a whole kitchen and TV (not required) and couple of wooden upright chairs to relax on instead of hammocks (required). We tried to relax on the deck chairs down by the water but the stench from the septic (?) or sewage tank was too much to bear so we chose to lie in our dark little bedroom with the lights on while we read our books that day.

We loved the wildlife on the island - woodpeckers in the trees, butterflies and amazing bird life.

It takes a lot of effort to keep that place going in such a remote location, so think of it as an expensive backpackers.

The best things about our stay were provided by Mother Nature, not Asalem.
