We visited four excellent places in Brazil for our honeymoon, and Vila Pedra Mar was the best. If you are in the vicinity of Rio de Janeiro, you should try to make it out to Ilha Grande. The inn is on Praia Vermelha, a quiet village on the northwest side of the island. If you're researching Ilha Grande, your experience here will probably be quite different than what the guidebooks say, because the villa is a few hours from Abraão, the largest town on Ilha Grande that most people visit; you will not visit Abraão, and you will not visit Lopes Mendes beach.
Ilha Grande is great for hiking and lounging on beaches. The villa is right around the corner from the beach, and there are a couple more secluded beaches a five-minute walk down the road. If you're willing to hike for a couple hours, there are many more beaches you can visit, and have almost all to yourself. And the hiking from the villa is nice — not too strenuous, through the jungle where you're shaded and likely to see many colourful butterflies and a few monkeys. The highlight of our honeymoon was a daytrip organized by the villa to Praia Aventureiro, on the south side of the island, where we spent the day on the most amazing white-sand beach we've ever seen and visited with two Magellanic penguins who had washed up on shore.
The honeymoon suite is as great as the other reviews say it is (it's spacious, has a beautiful bed, beautiful view, great TV for watching movies in bed and a huge open-concept shower), with two caveats. First, don't count on the plunge pool; it was barren during our visit because of a drought. Second, because of the island's location and the fact that there are many windows in the suite, you'll have lots of bugs in your room. There's a mosquito net around the four-post bed to keep them out, but if you get creeped out by moths, butterflies and dragonfly-type bugs, Ilha Grande may not be your ideal destination.
The breakfasts are OK — nothing fancy. Fresh fruit, cereal, toast, some eggs if you want. But the dinners are amazing. Owner Riann used to run a steakhouse in South Africa, so he knows how to whip up a fancy meal. His dinners under the stars on the roof of the villa are something special.
